Suggestions for next updates

#1 Post by ReNNoN » 2018-03-06 22:33

Hi,

Thanks for FileZilla.

Today I want to comment on a suggestion that I think is very important to include in FileZilla, in future updates.

This suggestion is to make the "Directory Comparison" functionality not show the green color in the folders.

This is because the folders are only modified at the time of creation.

Personally it always leads to confusion and I have to access all the folders and manually check that all the files are updated. This makes the "Directory Comparison" functionality lose utility.

We work with a NAS to share all the working directories between the developers and it is very confusing if the folders are shown in green.

Thank you very much for your help and I ask you to excuse my bad English.

regards

It all depends on the server's file system. For example, with NTFS, directory timestamps are updated with every change inside that directory (no idea if it recurses, though). Directories on FAT stay at the same timestamp.

Green means "appears to be the same". Unfortunately, comparison is very limited due to the limited amount of information the server provides in listings. Officially, FTP doesn't even support checksums.

I'll add my vote for improved directory comparison in the next version.

My ideal would be to ignore the timestamps on the directories and simply introspect the files within the directory, recursively. If all files are the same and same time stamp, then directory disappears from comparison. If any differences in files within directory or subdirectories, then show folder as yellow or green as appropriate. It's so confusing to see yellow and green folders when all that means is the directory creation date was different but the underlying files and subdirectories are totally up to date.

I purchased the manual, looked thru the forums and have not found anything that I can do to display file creation dates. A standard option on a mac display, and really useful at the very least on the local pane when doing global changes, thus I now have a list of last modified dates which are all the same and am unable to differentiate files from their original creation. Help?

thanks
Larry

FileZilla can only show modification timestamps. Please note that neither FTP nor SFTP servers send any creation or access timestamps in listings.

I purchased the manual,
Certainly not from here, there is no manual up for purchasing. All documentation is freely available. If you bought through a different site then you might have been scammed. There is also no guarantee for correctness of that "manual".
Actually there now is a manual, it's one of the choices displayed when downloading FileZilla the normal way. It soon will also be available for all FileZilla Pro customers.

well.... scammed... right... wow

i've figured out a solution using the mac finder and filezilla - i just search my local files using the finder which will allow me to access the creation dates. a work around.

thanks!

The normal way? There is nothing on the download page, I checked?

Yes. If using Windows or Mac, with a somewhat recent browser having JavaScript enabled, a choice appears if you click on the big green button on the download page.

Ah OK, I never click that button, it leads to the bad FileZilla download.
