It would be super if one could toggle between detail listing of image files and seeing thumbnails of image files ... just like in windows explorer.
It is difficult to keep track of which file name goes with any specific image and actually seeing an icon or thumbnail of the image would be a huge time saver.

This is not possible with FTP. FTP does not offer direct access to server files, so, you'd actually have to completely download ALL images before you could show any thumbnails.
