well . . .
it is not really "FTP stuff"
but "html stuff" - and sometimes controlled by the server settings where you have your website hosted
you might try changing its name to index.htm
if that does not work, then please send me the url to your site
and I can probably help

Thanks for your help. It turns out I was being a bit of a Muppet and had accidentally renamed my index.html file: "index..html". It's always the smallest of errors!

Thanks anyway!

I am having this problem. I just started creating a website with Dreamweaver and when I uploaded the files (with FileZilla) the root directory shows up - I forgot to create the index.html file.

How do I create the index file AFTER I've uploaded the site?

Huh? The first file you want to load should be named index.html or index.htm - if it is missing simply create in on your PC and upload it like the other files.

Hey all. I just wanted to follow up.

Apparently, when I was trying to upload the index file, the hosting company forgot to create a folder in the root drive that was for the website.

After a couple of emails, they finally created one.

So, I think you can close this one.

Thx for the help all.

I think the basic problem is that it is not ftp but html. I think the author should contact the hosting company which hosts this website to do Multivariate Testing. I seriously feel that this error is due to the server settings of the hosting company. He should send a detailed email to them telling them about the problem and soon they will rectify it. I hope that he will let us know the end result.

Basically this can be set to your default in the admin CP for your web hosting. Or if you are dedicated, your Apache server settings has these settings in the config file.

This is not a FTP ( File transfer protocol is something else ) Index.html is a home page of your website when you build it from HTML coding.

The problem of Fareez is that he has no index.html file or index.htm or index.php file in his /public_html directory. So if you want your page to appear, make sure you go in the folder /public_html and upload your index.htm/html/php whatever it is and it will appear. Nothing simpler.
