That is the theory but in reality, the function of CAPTCHA appears to be to frustrate the hell out of the user as many of the words are unreadable.

To protect your privacy. Why should twitter or facebook know which forums you use?

Don't use captcha guys, it sucks major **** , use something like keycapcha , sweetcapcha (not sure if this works for phpbb). People and bots can easily take care of recapcha and regular capcha.

The image based "js" capchas are much harder to crack. But robots become more human every day :/ I got rid of phpbb on my website because I couldn't handle 30,000 spam posts a day, most linking to pron and other "dirty" stuff.

But no, no making people pay to use a forum is going to kill this website :/

The best solution against spam is a /six-pack of CIDR :P

CIDR sounds like some sort of chemical warfare product, drop that on them it should stop them. Or did you mean cider, if you dropped a six pack of that onto them that would also stop them but what a waste.

I think the biggest problem with spam is that people are employed to manually enter info into web forms so they can easily get round whatever measures are put in place. For me, a very basic 4 number captcha works well. It at least stops the automated bots from stuffing your contact forms full of rubbish.
