Extern drive or Web drive or ......

#1 Post by McFire » 2011-10-22 15:47

Hallo,
'till now I'm not forced to have an external drive, but now I've been looking around the net for such device. No experiences in this topic....
1st)
I'm faced with a lot'f terms : External drive - Web drive - flash drive - data cloud and so on.
What's the correct name of a drive located somewhere in the universe, but usable by me?
2nd)
There seems to be a lot'f differences in handling.
What I need is :
- a login to one and only one "partner" and not "then you must..." and "also you have..." and so on.
- an (minimal) interface-windows where I'm able to supervise my efforts and extern files/folders
- work/show my files with normal html/url use.
There is no need to have so called Webspace, which is hosted and good watched by a provider.
It's only for files from not so high importance. If there are some times of no availablity - no problem.
After riding around the net I'm really confused, what to do and what's possible.....

Is there a expert in this topic ?

It sounds like you need some "cloud" storage and it really depends upon how much you need on what your best option would be. I'm in the US and I know things are different in other parts of the world, but you might want to Google Microsoft SkyDrive or Google Cloud Storage. I'm sure one of them will have a solution that will work for you.

If you find this helpful checkout <removed>

Hallo Bjvalla,
thanx for your info, so I'll go there and have a look at.

But what means "checkout removed" ? (Sometimes I hit the limits of my english)

It means that potential advertisement has been removed from that user's reply. There used to be a link to a commercial third-party website.

Really depends on how much you want to spend. You could go as cheap as a simple cloud or as extreme as a fail over cluster with cloud backup.

Between Storing on a cloud server (Paying monthly) and buying an external 320GB hdd, what do you think is better?
