Windows Security
The only logged intrusion I've had was somebody's attempt to log in as admin ... failed 5 times and the ban went into effect. Then somebody tells me that open FTP ports are a favorite way to introduce viruses, etc.; then a bunch of screwy things happened that shut down the Windows firewall and got my machine locked up. Don't know if the two things are actually related, but now I'm nervous about having ports open.
Generic recommendation is to have programs registered as firewall exceptions rather than ports. OK ... so I'm posting here instead of in the server support forum ... expecting everybody else understands the issue so much better than I do.
Comments on security set-up anyone?

I think you are wrong. I have zone alarm firewall and every time when I try to turn it off for a couple of hours I get thousands of trojans, worms and the other kind of malware. I know because I check my pc every day with spyware doctor and if I keem my firewall turned on it can't find any problems. Anyway just a few minutes after I turn off Zone Alarm I get infection. Anyway windows firewall is absolutely useless so I recommend installing some other like zone alarm, noton internet security or some similar, but working without any protection is nonsence.[/quote]Firewalls just cause more problems than they solve. With proper configuration, a system is secure enough without a firewall (note that we're speaking about Windows here, which is insecure by design, not even a firewall helps there).
You might want to visit Windows Update.
Any maybe there already is some (undetected) trojan on your system and it just fails to download additional malware because of the firewall. In other words: Closing your eyes does not make you invisible
My guess is you're not doing a clean reinstallation of your system once you detect some malware.
Zone Anal, Norton crap, those are the worst of the worst.

There are reasons to have a firewall.
1. If you don't have a router, you need a firewall.
2. If you are using your router's DMZ option, you need a firewall.
3. If you need something to stop certain programs from accessing certain things online, you need a firewall.
4. If you're not very good with computers and download alot of crap and/or go to some particularly suspicious sites (especially porn/warez sites), you need a firewall.
Those are all the reasons I can come up with right now, but I think they're pretty good ones. I apply to the second reason.

No Firewall can do that. There are enough holes to work around any firewall. A dedicated program can always bypass any firewall unless you totally block traffic for everything. In that case it's easier to pull the plug though.beatme101 wrote:3. If you need something to stop certain programs from accessing certain things online, you need a firewall.
These users should turn off their computers and read a nice book instead. That way they cannot cause any harm. No firewalls needed to read a good book.4. Re: Windows Security
Just install nod32 antivirus stuff and thats it. Firewalls suck.
Re:
Yes some can. Firewalls can stop programs from using each other to go online, and also I meant not just malware, but normal software that maybe downloads advertisements inside itself (Starcraft is a good example). With most firewalls you can set rules to block programs from doing specific things, such accessing HTTP.botg wrote:No Firewall can do that. There are enough holes to work around any firewall. The only reason it's acceptable to not recommend a firewall these days is because antivirus programs have broadened their scope and because most people are using routers.
