How do I get my website onto my computer?

Can someone suggest me some ways to get the files from the server of my website onto my computer? I have tried everything but I am having difficulties. Could someone please assist me? Thank you;

What software did you use to create your website. If you use something like dreamweaver then you can just download everything locally on your PC. I'd recommend this not only for backup but you want to do all of your changes and edits locally on your PC first, then upload it back on your server. I've found dreamweaver the best to use for this.
