Flood of new members today - a Bot at work?

#1 Post by ronczap » 2018-02-22 17:37

I've noticed a lot of new members joining today and each one of them shows that their first name is the same as their last name.

Looks like some sort of BOT at work...

Looking at the bottom of the member list and browsing backwards it looks line over 360 new members have been added since Feb 20 and clicking on the names shows first-name = last-name...

Thank you, the offending IP address has been banned and all users created by it have been deleted.

I think there may still be some left - the earliest on I see is #64457 on the member list.
Make that #64444

Still finding more

Michele3
GEFTabit
IveySell
DottyCar
RolandMa
KellyFla
DianaX78
RandallU
LiliaWil
etc

Maybe some were set up with a different IP

I'm sure you can identify faster than I can - maybe scanning for members with first name = last name

Wow - that cut the member count in half!

I wonder what the rational was for setting up all of the bogus accounts - Denial of Service attack or something? Who knows...

Spambots are written by the most inept people. They are too incapable to become regular software developers. It shows in the quality of the spambots.
