Corrupt htm files downloaded from website

#1 Post by David P » 2008-07-09 15:52

As a newby using FileZilla 3.0.11.1, coming over from SmartFTP, and responsible for servicing a website, I am finding that I now cannot download 'htm' files without them becoming corrupt. When I click on the file after downloading, I get a page of what looks like Japanese or Chinese text interspersed with a few English words.

When I check the Source file, I find that much of the original text has changed to small vertical rectangles. For example, the downloaded file, like the original, begins with '<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">' but on the next line '<HTML>' has become '਍਍਍਍਍਍਍਍਍਍਍'. This problem recurs repeatedly throughout the source file.

This would not appear to be the fault of my computer as a colleague is encountering exactly the same difficulty with his. Is this a bug in the system?

Please help. This is serious problem for us.

Many thanks.

Many thanks for your prompt advice. But I really have no idea how to transfer the files in binary type. Could you please explain?

Sorry to be so ignorant.

Filezilla settings. Transfers-Filetypes, set Default transfer type to 'Binary' and try again.

Boco, I received excellent advice from you before. May I resort to your expertise again ?

Here is the problem:

I have a Word file called homonymesfrançais.htm which I can't open on my site
michel-desfayes.org

The htm is
file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Desfayes/Mes%20documents/homonymesfrancais.htm

The URL reads
http://www.michel-desfayes.org/Mes%20documents/Site/homonymesfrancais.html

instead of michel-desfayes.org/homonymes.html

I'm told this file is corrupt. It may have nothing to do with FileZilla. Is there a way to fix the problem without being an expert ?

Regards
MD

Code: Select all

file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Desfayes/Mes%20documents/homonymesfrancais.htm
This is on your harddisk.

Code: Select all

http://www.michel-desfayes.org/Mes%20documents/Site/homonymesfrancais.html
Can't reach that file, 404.

Code: Select all

michel-desfayes.org/homonymes.html
The file may not be actually corrupt, only linked incorrect. You must correctly link to this file from the main page. Doesn't Word fix the links itself? I don't have Word, and I don't have HTML knowledge, you'd have to ask another person for details... :(

(This thread actually has nothing to do with Filezilla and FTP, so I move to Offtopic.

hmm it seems like you havent uploaded it properly...i will need to see your site structure to work this one out. this means:
all files and folders in the root folder and all sub directories.

PM it to me so no one else can see it :)

Three years ago, I raised the following problem:

"As a newby using FileZilla 3.0.11.1, coming over from SmartFTP, and responsible for servicing a website, I am finding that I now cannot download 'htm' files without them becoming corrupt. When I click on the file after downloading, I get a page of what looks like Japanese or Chinese text interspersed with a few English words."

Boco suggested I should download in "binary" which solved my problem. The same problem has now reappeared. When I download a page from my website, it appears to be in Chinese. But I can no longer find "binary" on the FileZilla Site Manager.

I should be grateful for your advice.

While being connected to the server, right click the icon in the status bar like the image shows. Alternatively, find the option in the FileZilla settings.

Hi boco,

I have the same problem with the Chinese characters. I wanted to try your suggestion of setting the transfer type to binary, but I don't see the same menu that you are describing. When I right click, I see Process Queue, Stop and remove all, Action after queue completion. Is it because my version is outdated? I think I downloaded it recently. Can you help me?

No, you just clicked at the wrong place. The icon is in the status bar, and it is only shown while being connected to an FTP server. Too bad the screenshots don't catch the mouse cursor, but it's the icon at the bottom-left end of the menu popup (the second).

Note that feature isn't available for SFTP servers. SFTP transfers through FileZilla are always Binary.
