Speed fluctuation on GB network
I have 3 servers setup on a Gigabit network. They are the only nodes on the network. 1 server runs filezilla server while the other 2 use filezilla client. Both clients have databases, 1 of which is 170 GB and the other being 70 GB. I ftp these databases nightly as a backup. Backup time varies but both will normally finish within 2 hours. I've noticed while monitoring the server that the speed will jump around a lot, going from 5Mb to 80Mb a second. Normally, it will start off at 5Mb and gradually increase to 80 and then bottom out at 0 for about 3 seconds before picking up again. What would cause this? These backups could finish much faster if the speed remained constant.

Can the disks write the data fast enough?

I would think so. All servers are on a RAID 10 array with Seagate 15000 RPM drives. 8 GB of RAM.botg wrote:Can the disks write the data fast enough?

I thought we where using filezilla for the client piece but we are using standard command line ftp.

Standard ftp.exe from Windows? If so, try a real client, see if it makes a difference.
