Server: Mode S Support

Is "mode s" a valid FTP server command?

FileZilla Server responds with:
500 Syntax error, command unrecognized.

My HP Unix FTP server responds with:
We only support stream mode, sorry.

My mainframe client ends when it sees the FZ Server response.
