Setting up a friends server.

#1 Post by piemanpm » 2009-07-08 03:48

I did exactly to his what I did with 3 others that I have set up. And are working. But I have never used his kind of router before, So i wasn't exactly sure how to do it.

Edit --> Settings
General Settings -->
Changed listening port to 52562
Passive Mode Settings -->
Use the following IP to smurfgod.homedns.org
Custom port range changed to 52512 - 52562
Click OK

Edit --> Users
Added jamie
Added a password to it
Added a random directory to it
Click OK

Now he set up his router part, because I wasn't sure on how to work a " westell versalink model 327w dsl " but looking from the screenshot he sent me, it seems to be set up OK:

He did the windows Firewall thing. And he is using windows 7.

But when I come to try and connect to it on my side, I'm getting this:

Status: Resolving address of smurfgod.homedns.org
Status: Connecting to 72.161.88.193:52562...
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server
Status: Waiting to retry...
Status: Delaying connection for 1 second due to previously failed connection attempt...
Status: Resolving address of smurfgod.homedns.org
Status: Connecting to 72.161.88.193:52562...
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server

Could anyone please help me, help my friend? I have a feeling it's the router and port setup. But I'm not 100% sure.

Here it is working on the exact same setup other than the router. ftp://random:test@jamie-test.ftpaccess.cc:52562/

Thanks.

According to https://ftptest.net/ your server is working just fine. Looks like there's some rogue firewall on the client system.

The one I linked is mine, which is working.

His is ftp://jamie:bob@smurfgod.homedns.org:52562

He says he only has windows firewall, which we have tried tuning off.

Was thinking of maybe running Server 2003 in a virtual machine...Would I still have access to my files to share??

Yes, provided you somehow forward the required ports.

SOLVED!

Weirdly, we can access the server only when a port isn't entered.

But he can't access the server on his network PC's.

He attempted to connect using the LAN address?
Wierd.. you should be getting a "no listen ports set" error if you leave the listening port blank in FileZilla server interface... wait you meant while connecting?

Here is what I get when I leave the port blank when connecting... notice it is not FileZilla server.

Code: Select all

Status: Resolving address of smurfgod.homedns.org

Status: Connecting to 72.161.88.193

Status: Connected, waiting for welcome message

You should change the passive mode to 52512 - 52561 (Just to be safe)

You should also make sure the listen socket is created-

Click the lightning bolt on the FileZilla server interface
Click yes to take it offline.
Then Click lightning bolt again and check for(in the log window):
"Creating listen socket on port xxx...
Server online"
