unkown IP addresses trying to connect - is this usual???

Is it usual for users/spamers to try and connect to servers via ftp inorder to hack them? i can see in my Logs that about 8 unknown IP addresses that are trying to connect with different usernames. They seem to try for 30mins at a time about 4 times a day...

Any ideas?

Yes, normal. You can safely ignore these bots. Just make sure your passwords are long.

so, they are bots.... does this mean these programs are written just to try and crack a server and then be used for spam?

Essentially yes. And also other purposes, not just spam.
