I cant connect to my server.

#1 Post by Techplex.Engineer » 2009-10-17 01:57

Hello...

I have setup the filezilla server and cant seem to connect to it with the filezilla client.
I have read the Network COnfiguration wiki page.
My server is behynd a Linksys wrt54gs wireless router v7.2.06.
I have set my server as the "DMZ" on my network.

I have run the Network Configuration Wizard. I could not get it to connect.
I am not sure which computer to run it on.
I have tried running it on the server itself, a local lan connected computer and at a remote location.
The output from on the server is:

Code: Select all

Connecting to probe.filezilla-project.org
Response: 220 FZ router and firewall tester ready

I tried an ftp tester and it connected successfully:

Guys,

I am totally new to this FTP thing, I read the question posted here, I read the network configuration guide, I opened up Port 21 in my router, I have a static IP, I unchecked "Don't use external IP address on local connections" and test with consistent failure. I have changed port numbers in my router from 21 to 5000-6000 and back to 21 again, I have tried changing the options in the network configuration wizard. No dice. I consistently get the reply:

Connecting to probe.filezilla-project.org
Response: 220 FZ router and firewall tester ready
USER FileZilla
Response: 331 Give any password.
PASS 3.2.8.1
Response: 230 logged on.
Checking for correct external IP address
IP XX.XXX.XXX.XX hg-cad-bba-gd
Response: 200 OK
PREP 1566
Response: 200 Using port 1566, data token 2080880459
PORT XX,XXX,XXX,XX,6,30
Response: 502 Port mismatch. Tainted by router or firewall.
PORT command tainted by router or firewall.
Connection closed

As I understand it the standard FTP Port is 21. When I run the wizard it talks about ports 5000-6000 in one setting, when I look at the host machine it says specify a range from 1 a huge number (I can't recall and it doesn't seem important for the sake of this discussion.); I am just totally flummoxed. I can access my IP cameras through my router, I somehow managed to get their ports opened up in the router where I can see them externally, but wow, this FTP thing is really throwing me for a loop. Here are some specific questions so hopefully someone can succinctly answer them without too much trouble:

1 - Am I correct Port 21 is the port I need to open on the router?

2 - If Port 21 is the correct port and it is now open, I have also set Zone Alarm to allow FileZilla to work as a server without restriction, I am on a static IP, again I am behind a router and have opened Port 21 up; what do I then need to specify with regard to port numbers in the FileZilla host and client configurations?

3 - Does anybody see any obvious screw ups?

Update 1: I have now rechecked "Don't use external IP address on local connections" and have been testing via a client hooked onto another network connection. That client connection is via a NAT'd server but the very nice network configuration wizard fixes that for me. The result continues to be "Response: 502 Port mismatch. Tainted by router or firewall. PORT command tainted by router or firewall."

Update 2: Continued testing from another network source gives me the following:

Connecting to probe.filezilla-project.org
Response: 220 FZ router and firewall tester ready
USER FileZilla
Response: 331 Give any password.
PASS 3.2.8.1
Response: 230 logged on.
Checking for correct external IP address
Retrieving external IP address from http://ip.filezilla-project.org/ip.php
Checking for correct external IP address
IP XX.XX.XXX.XXX XX-XX-XX-XXX-XXX
Response: 200 OK
PREP 4939
Response: 200 Using port 4939, data token 170313037
PORT XX,XX,XX,XXX,XXX,19,75
Response: 502 Port mismatch. Tainted by router or firewall.
PORT command tainted by router or firewall.
Connection closed

Update 3: OK, I figured out part of the problem and it was the router. I used a product I have used previously, "Port Forward" (http://portforward.com/), and it did get the router at least more tuned up. NOTE: If you use this product to make the changes to your router, make notes about its current configuration. I had numerous IP camera's set up with custom port settings and it totally blew them away. Anyway, now the issue is while the network configuration tool still bombs out, actually trying to log into the FTP host gets me the following:

Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode (76,203,110,63,14,126)
Command: MLSD
Response: 425 Can't open data connection.
Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing

I see a lot of people with the exact same types of problems. It seems the pat answer is "All explained in Network Configuration.", but if that was the case I posit there would not be so many people with the same issues. Yes, in the broad sense the information may be in that guide, but the specifics are what people like me need. I say all of this because I don't want any input if that is all I am going to get. I will keep slogging at this, if someone has some really beneficial input I will take it and then when I am done I will make a post with all of my configuration information so if someone with my precise setup needs the information they will have the benefit of my struggles.

So, now when I run the test at https://ftptest.net/ rather than simply bombing out it gets pretty far into the test, ending with:

Status: PASV
Reply: 227 Entering Passive Mode (76,203,110,63,15,177)
Status: MLSD

At that point it says the connection fails. There is something in a setting somewhere which is not liking the transition to passive mode and which keeps the client program from being able to get the directory. There is my idiot assessment.

Back to the salt mines...

Thanks much in advance,

Phil

Success!

OK, finally figured out some more setting issues. Here is a recap:

Host and Client Computer Configuration - XP Pro SP3, Zone Alarm on Host, XP firewall enabled on client, AVG 8.5 on both

Router - Configured to pass ports 21, 990 and range 61000-61400 to Host Computer IP address

Host FileZilla - Configured to use ports 21 and 61000-61400 on passive setting

Client FileZilla - Tested to Host IP on LAN with success, tested on secondary network source (i.e. backup Internet connection) to public IP address and port 21 with success

Tip - Transfer some files into the folder you set up the Host to show access to and you will see something rather than an empty folder

OK, this was a frustrating experience. I picked up bits and pieces, finally spotting the thread "Re: 425 Can't open data connection." (http://forum.filezilla-project.org/view ... ry+listing) where I got the additional ports to set up in both the router and the FileZilla Host configuration.

Good luck to all,

Phil
