installation issues... service or not?

#1 Post by JasonD » 2010-09-04 17:12

I installed the server with the recommended settings, and it runs as a service, hidden in the background, which I dislike. So I reinstalled it to be not as a service, and it says not-recommended. But why?

Ok, so after installing as NOT a service, Windows Firewall complains, and asks if it should unblock the program. Is this the reason this is not recommended?

Running it as a program is not recommended because it then runs in the context of the logged-on user. So it neither will run when no user is logged on (the state real servers are in most of the time), nor will it run correctly if the logged-on user has restricted permissions. Therefore it's not recommended.

Thank you for the information.

I think it's great that FileZilla exists, for both Client and Server, but the documentation is very limited, making it frustrating to use unless you're already used to this kind of thing, and I fear this may be limiting its audience. I'm still trying to figure out why my server is not working -- it didn't work as a Service, and now continues to not work running as a program (with a logged in used with full permissions)... and unfortunately the lack of error codes returned are making it hard to diagnose the problem. I will figure it out eventually, but this takes time. So it'd be great to have a check list, or installation guide, for those of us not used to this... (I'm aware of the FAQ.)

Constructive criticism for a great product...
Take care,

The client is well documented, see http://wiki.filezilla-project.org. The server is not, as it is on the back burner and not developed right now.

Maybe you should start by describing the symptoms.

Thanks for the reply.

I have no problem connecting to the server from a client on the same PC if I connect to the internal IP. But if I connect to the external IP, it just doesn't respond... times out. I am on a PC with wireless internet connected directly to the modem. There is no router acting like a firewall, so I don't have to port forward. I'm running Windows Vista, and the FileZilla install already added an exception to the Firewall. I've even gone into the modem and added a port mapping (not sure what that is) for FTP (port 21) just in case this is some kind of port forward that it was blocking, but it doesn't fix anything.

P.S. This is a good starting place for documentation:

Use port range 50000-50100, make 50000 the listening port, don't use the default port of 21. Try that and report back.

A modem has no port forwarding/mapping, so you have a router. You need to forward the complete range of ports, not just the listening port.

Do you test from outside your network? The external IP has no meaning inside it.

Thanks so much for the reply. So port forwarding and port mapping are the same thing. I thought it was strange that my modem has "port mapping"... so obviously it IS a router. Duh. I actually knew this but just wasn't thinking. My shortcut I made to connect to it is even named "router". Lol.

Ok I see in the Server FAQ:
http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/FAQ
That I have to set the custom ports myself in the server settings, and it recommends 5000-5100. So I'll have to port forward these over as well.

Thanks for your help. I'll let you know when I get it working. ;)

Ok, so it somewhat works. You were right, I cannot test the connection from my own PC, even using the external IP. I wonder why? Anyway, my problem reported from ftptest.net:

Error: Non-number segment in PASV reply
Make sure the server is configured to allow passive mode connections.
If the server is behind a NAT router, make sure the server knows its external IP address.
The range of ports used for passive mode must be opened in all involved firewalls.
The range of ports used for passive mode must be forwarded by all involved NAT routers.
Try uninstalling all firewalls and plug your computer directly into your modem, thus bypassing the router.

I think the server is automatically configured to allow passive mode connections. I've told the server it's external IP. I've port forwarded 5000-5100 to the PC. I've told the server to use ports 5000-5100. My firewall (Windows Vista) automatically has an entry for FileZilla Server, but I'm not sure if this is enough to allow ports 5000-5100, so I turned off the firewall, and the same error still occurs, so that's not it. Not sure what else to try...?

Basically an external user can log in, but cannot start passive mode transfers, so they cannot see a directory listing.

External PC is not valid in LAN. This is normal due to the way NAT/PAT works.

Would you please post the actual log from the test (not just the error message)? Obviously there's a problem with the PASV reply.

Ok sure: I've replaced my IP address with xxx.xxx.xxx.xx and the username with xxx, but other than that, it's verbatim:

You destroyed the most valuable information.

Is the double bracket at the end of the PASV line original? Compare with the same line in the server log. They must be exactly the same.

I feared I may have done that. The double bracket shows only in ftptest.net, but not in the logs (at least not in the server interface window, since the log file itself is empty; it must not flush its cache right away, which is strange). Also note that the last two numbers differ in both cases, for some reason... I don't know what they mean so I'm not sure if this is normal.

Server interface window/screen log:

Code: Select all

(000013)06/09/2010 17:24:20 PM - username (62.75.138.232)> PWD
(000013)06/09/2010 17:24:20 PM - username (62.75.138.232)> 257 "/" is current directory.

(000013)06/09/2010 17:24:20 PM - username (62.75.138.232)> disconnected.
