Increasing download speed behind linksys BESFR41 ver. 3

#1 Post by kross40 » 2006-02-01 16:16

i have filezilla server running on win98 and i have the router configured coreectly(i think). i have no problem connecting though local network and people have no problem connecting from outside i.p.'s with i.e. or filezilla client.

the problem i seem to be having is that the download for people connecting from outside i.p.'s is limited to 20 - 40 kbs. small files transfer without incedent but large files time out and/or are corrupt, due to not being able to finish downloading.

within the local network i can connect though i.e. and download at 3meg. is there a way to speed up downloads from outside i.p.'s and/or fixing the timed out problem?

i am new to filezilla and i appologize if i have not provided enough info. can't think of anything else to put in right now.

thanks in advance.

Kevin.

How? AFAIK, FileZilla Server won't run in Windows 98 since it relies on running as an NT service. Then again, I've never tried to install it on Win98...

hmm .. well it works, is it possible that this could be my speed/time out issue since it is not running as a nt service? or is it ? how would i check?

one thing i noticed is that under the misc. tab the are settings for "internal transfer buffer size" and " socket buffer size". my question is this, it states the if i am having slow transfer rates that i can adjust these but do not go to far as it will cause problems, what is a good setting to start at cause the default settings have me capped at 30kbs download and upload?

Just experiment with a few values.

It might be caused by Windows 98. Please update to a recent version of Windows that is still supported by Microsoft.

quite possible. i know there is a lot of variables that can be messing with me.

would you have an idea of what download speeds would be if everything were perfect?

is that a fair question?

i have gotten it so there are no problems with anything else but speed.

i'll put it on my xp machine and see if that helps or not.

thanks for the input.

Transferring data between two of my computers over 100Mbit connection, I can easily reach 8MB/s. The limitating factor for me are my slow disks.

transfering between computers on my network reaches 3 mb/s easy. the problem is when some one outside my network downloads from me.

xp got me up to 97.7 kb/s, but big downloads fail. changed ethernet cards in the 98 machine and it get's 97.7 kb/s as well and big downloads fail as well.

prolly need to get a t1 or better to get the kind of speeds that wont fail on big files.

oh well.. thanks again for your time.
