Ok Thanks.
So I am set in pasive mode. I have a router on the network and a dynamic IP address.
So I checked retrieve an external IP address.

The online FTP tester asks for Host , port, username and password so what do I put in?

I am still none the wiser as to what you connect to on the internet using a client.

A guy in the USA has a few files to send me and I need to send him the host address, account and password.

Thanks for any help to a total newbie.

The online FTP tester asks for Host , port, username and password so what do I put in?
Host: Would be your current external IP. There are services like DynDNS which can provide you with a static URL, though.
Port: The port you set as listening port in the server. Default 21.
Username and password: Login data for the account you set up on the server.
