"could not send reply, disconnected." on all FTP c

#1 Post by sychochump » 2006-07-26 16:19

Hi there,

I'm having some trouble connecting to my ftp server from the outside world. Here's what is happening every time I try to connect:

From the server:

(000020) 7/26/2006 9:01:44 AM - (not logged in) (yyy.yyy.yyy)> Connected, sending welcome message...
(000020) 7/26/2006 9:01:44 AM - (not logged in) (yyy.yyy.yyy)> 220 Booya
(000020) 7/26/2006 9:01:44 AM - (not logged in) (yyy.yyy.yyy)> could not send reply, disconnected.

From the client:

Status: Connecting to xxx.xxx.xxx ...
Status: Connected with xxx.xxx.xxx. Waiting for welcome message...
Error: Disconnected from server
Error: Unable to connect!

The server is not behind a NAT firewall or anything, it is a machine plugged directly into the net. It has a software firewall installed, port 21 open. I have also tried disabling the firewall, and it has the same effect.

The client is behind a firewall, but can connect to other servers on port 21 no problem.

I did a quick search in the forums and didn't find anything similar. Any thoughts appreciated! Thanks!

Please read the FAQ sticky in this forum, chapter 2 for configuring your firewall properly, you have to open more ports than just 21.

thanks for the reply boco, but as I said I completely disabled my firewall and still get the same issue.

Any other ideas?

thanks cszeto,

I added a rule to zone alarm to allow all connections coming from the trusted zone, same results. Any other ideas?

There are some ISPs blocking commonly used ports for FTP. Have you tried using a nonstandard port?

Have you tried uninstalling "Broken Alarm" to rule it out of the situation/configuration?

Thanks guys,

I haven't really had much time to work on this, but I think it might be a combination of the firewall and my ISP. I'll give uninstalling the firewall and changing the standard ports a shot when I get some time.

Thanks for your help!
