Need help using Filezilla...

#1 Post by oukourj » 2006-08-09 11:53

Hi.

I want to build an FTP but when I try to connect to it from another computer, it says:
"Connected to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:21, waiting for welcome message..."
And nothing else, exepted
"Unable to connect to server"
And so on until he tried 5 times and says it's impossible.

My server is on an ADSL connection, behind a router, and no firewall (maybe the windows one; could this be a problem?).

I routed the port 21 on the "SUA Server Settings" panel of my router (a Zexel Prestige 600 Series).

What could be the problem?

I really have to do this FTP, please help.

Thanks.

The windows one IS a problem if not configured correctly/at all.

Please read the FAQ in this forum. Note that you can define no port ranges in the WinFirewall, there are better ones out there for free. (example: google for Kerio Personal firewall)

Thanks for the answer!

Is the passive mode needed, in order to do an SSL secured server (i'm looking for the higher security level ever seen with an FTP!)?

Passive FTP and FTP over SSL have nothing to do with each other.

But without Passive mode FTP you could get problems as Active FTP is not Firewall friendly.

I see...

Well.

My situation improved a bit, since those few days.
I just tried to create an SSL server with FileZilla.
It's configurated like that:

- Listen on port 21. (Routed on my SUA Server Setup router's page)
Passive settings:
- Listen on Default IP (or listen on my Internet IP [195.xxx.xxx.xxx], result is the same).
- Use ports 1025 and 1026 for passive mode. (Routed...)
- [x] Enable SSL support
- [x] Allow explicit SSL/TLS on normal connexions
- [ ] Force explicit SSL/TLS
- Listen for SSL/TLS connexions on port 990

I created one account, for which i checked the "Force SSL logon" box.

I'm also under ZoneAlarm, wich gives all access to my entire LAN IP range (192.168.1.1 -> 192.168.1.254), and all access for the FileZilla server.

Ok.

I made some test on my ports, on http://www.t1shopper.com.

After I scanned my port 21, the scanner ALWAYS answered me that no service were running on this port .
I tried this before activating SSL.
After I activated SSL, it changed nothing :]
The port 21 still looked like dead, regarding to the scanner results.

But when I scan the port 990, it works.
He says there is a service on it.

here's my first question:
"Do my SFTP over SSL need to work with the port 21?"
Thanks.

I also made some tests with http://www.web2ftp.com, triying to connect on my FTP.
It seemed to work, because FileZilla wrote some lines, saying that he saw the client.
Look what it gives:

Phew...

What is wrong with my configuration?

Please help!

Might be possible that your ISP blocks port 21.
