Newbie needs some help connecting plse

#1 Post by ozmart2006 » 2006-08-20 09:39

OK I installed Filezilla server on a network maching running WinXP.

I am coming across an odd thing.. when I try to change my password for my user (who is also part of a group) after I click ok and go back in to look at it it has changed and there is some password in there with about 30 odd characters. Does it every time.

I was trying to use my wan address to connect initially but I understand you can't do that from another network machine? But I can't connect even using my lan address, not even with an anonymous account I set up with no password.

I am hoping that if I can sort oit this weird password thing that I should e able to connect from the network via my lan address and externally via my wan address.

Would love some guidance on this. Thks.

This issue has been discussed already. Filezilla Server does not store your password, it stores the MD5 hash of your password. The length of the hash is 32 bytes. That is what you see in the display.

Your password works. FZ Server recomputes the hash when you connect, and compares the two hashes to see if the password is correct. If they match, you may enter.

OK- I can connect and download but couldnt seem to upload any files..iI got a 550 permission denied and other times no reason....so I chnaged the permissions to be able to write and append to the directory...is this ok...I don't want to create a security hole!

Shouldn't cause any security problems unless you forget to set a password or use a weak one.

I had it all working great, then I decided to get rid of all the Norton stuff on the pc and use Windows Firewall. I added FTP as a service so thats all good. I can connect to the FTP server via the LAN addess on the network but now no-one external can connect anymore.

They keep getting a popup error message saying Windows can't access the folder and make sure you spelt it correctly - just a generic error msg.

What could be going on here? I suspected that Windows Firewall was stopping it but I turned it off completely and I still can't get an external connection. So whats left, if its not the firewall it must be something in the settings?

Also, for passive connections should I use the default or should I specify my ip address, e.g. as ftp://123.345.789 etc

THks

If your WAN IP is static, enter it in Passive mode settings and use it. If it's dynamic, the 'Retrieve external IP' option is good choice.
