can't connect through router
Hi
I cannot connect my Filezilla FTP Server to the Internet. Internally it works fine.
I have ADSL; I am behind an ethernet router (E-Tech). I have forwarded port 21 in my router, both TCP and UDP, to my computer's internal IP, but no connection from the Internet can be made with my FTP Server.
I followed instructions in the settings. I have specified my external IP address, I have specified the port range for PASV transfers, and I forwarded port 21 in my router.
For other apps like DC++ and emule I have done the same, and they work fine. I run Win XP and the latest FileZilla Server software.
I really don't understand why I can't get my Filezilla FTP Server to connect to the Internet.
Can anyone help me with this?
thanks!

Still no connection
Thanks for your quick reply.
Yes, I have selected ports range 5000 - 5004 for PASV file transfers, and I have forwarded those ports in my router to my internal PC IP as well. Still no connection can be made with my FTP Server from the Internet.
I have to specify those ports individually in my router, therefore I chose to only use a small ports range for PASV file transfer. Should I try any specific ports range? (Instructions said range 5000-5100 should work).
I hope so much to solve this problem. I would really love to use this FTP Server. Thanks.

I tried to connect to my FTP server from another computer, that is on my home network, but it connects to the Internet directly, just like the pC with the FTP server connects to the Internet directly.
I also tried by entering my external IP from within my own PC. Both won't connect. I always get the same message: "A connection with the server could not be established".

Well guys
To make sure the problem isn't my firewall, I completely removed the firewall from my system.
Guess what, I still can't connect to my FileZilla FTP Server from the Internet. When I type FTP://"my internal IP", it connects immediately, but when I type FTP://"my external IP", it gives me the same message as always: "A connection with the server could not be established".

These are the rules that I set in my router (in the 'Virtual Server' part of my router), to forward the ports for FileZilla FTP Server to my internal IP.
8 21 21 TCP 10.0.0.21
9 21 21 UDP 10.0.0.21
10 5000 5000 TCP 10.0.0.21
11 5000 5000 UDP 10.0.0.21
12 5001 5001 TCP 10.0.0.21
13 5001 5001 UDP 10.0.0.21
14 5002 5002 TCP 10.0.0.21
15 5002 5002 UDP 10.0.0.21
16 5003 5003 TCP 10.0.0.21
17 5003 5003 UDP 10.0.0.21
18 20 20 TCP 10.0.0.21
19 20 20 UDP 10.0.0.21
To compare, the following rules I set in my router to connect DC++ (rules 1 and 2) and Emule (rules 3 to 7). While DC++ and Emule are working fine, (in DC++ I managed to become an active user by forwarding the ports in my router to my internal PC), FileZilla FTP Server still won't connect:
1 1485 1485 TCP 10.0.0.21
2 1485 1485 UDP 10.0.0.21
3 4662 4662 TCP 10.0.0.21
4 4672 4672 UDP 10.0.0.21
5 4661 4661 TCP 10.0.0.21
6 4665 4665 UDP 10.0.0.21
7 4711 4711 TCP 10.0.0.21
If the problem is not the firewall, what can be the problem? Did I forward the ports correctly?

Looks like you tried to access the server using the external IP but still from inside your local network. Thist most likely doesn't work since routers only forward traffic originating from external machines.Volkmar wrote:Well guys

Try to connect to the server from a remote machine. You can use the following free service to test if your server works: http://www.web2ftp.com/
About your rules, you don't need to forward UDP, FTP only uses TCP connections.
GREAT!!!
Guys, I'm sorry I had to bother you all with this. Thanks so much!! I tried the website you suggested, http://www.web2ftp.com/, and it showed me the content of my FTP folder!!! I guess it can only show me so if my FTP Server actually works, and connects!
Thank you guys so much, for your efforts! I love how people on the Internet are willing to help each other, and support each other with great free software tools, and advice how to use them! Thanks so much guys!!!
