FTP Data Port Help

#1 Post by wb6qdi » 2007-07-31 13:32

I installed FileZilla on a laptop and tested it at home and all worked great. I have the Windows XP firewall enabled with FileZilla setup as an exception. I now have moved the computer to my ISP's site, behind their firewall. I can log in but can't get a directory listing remotely. My ISP only enabled access for me to port 21 in their firewall. I think I need to have one or more data ports open too? Only one user will ever connect to FileZilla at a time. What do you recommend? My ISP needs to know exactly what port numbers to enable.

I'm very new to this so really appreciate you help!

Thanks!!

Chuck

My ISP is not willing to open all ports. What are the minimum I can ask him to enable? If he just opens ports 20 and 21 would that be enough for one user to log on to upload or download files?

The computer is only used to hose a web site (using Abyss) and for FTP. There is a static IP assigned. Currently only ports 21 and 80 are forwarded through the ISP's firewall to this computer. I assume I can use Active mode with this setup and only have one additional port for data (port 20)?

Active mode works with ports 21 (command channel) and 20 (data channel) only. But it is not very client friendly, passive mode would be far better. I think fow low FTP traffic, 25 data ports should be enough.

Thanks so much for your reply!

Just to help me learn, could you tell me what the down side is using only ports 20 and 21 in Active mode? I am discussing with my ISP to see how many ports he's willing to enable so I can use Passive mode.

Also, the computer with the FTP server is behind their firewall. They assigned internal IP numbers with the port numbers I requested. Then they supplied me with an external static IP but with port numbers they assign (in the 2500 range). When the external address and their port is received, it translates to the internal IP with actual port numbers. Do I need to so something special to tell FileZilla what their external port numbers are or just use the actual port numbers?

I am using WS_FTP LE to send and receive files from FileZilla.

Thanks again for your help!!

Chuck

As for the Active vs. Passive Mode, you should read documents like http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html .
