Online scientific study disabled by automatic FileZilla Update 3.52.2- settings now fail

#1 Post by Mike63 » 2021-05-05 22:04

Hello,
I am broadcasting some nesting birds in birdboxes in which I have fitted cameras for the charity British Trust for Ornithology. The cameras push motion detect pictures to a FileZilla FTP laptop, which I thought this year was only running FileZilla client, but it worked. I have run this for 4 years, but the latest update to the sponsored FileZilla has broken this in the middle of the 2-week laying season. The current FZ looks to combine client and server? There are menus lost, like 'Users', and boxes gained, like Username and Password for Localhost. My working settings were copied into the new build. Firewall/router/NAT settings were all working 6 days ago.
I am stuck at a low level: I can't logon to localhost. In my working setup I changed the welcome message to '.' because the cameras don't care. I changed the default admin port for security. I timed out 20s waiting for a welcome message from Me to Me. I disabled the 20s timeout and now the server times out. I have logging enabled but there is no log file. Please advise on next steps? Nature won't wait on my FTP config!
Thanks in advance,
Mike

On consideration, it must have been the server service doing the work. I didn't need to logon to the laptop for files to transfer, but when changing config I used the lightning 'Server Online' button in the Filezilla console.

Based on the log, you are using the regular FileZilla client to connect to FileZilla Server's administration port instead of the FTP port. The administration port can only be used by the FileZilla Server Interface.

Thanks Tim. The latest Filezilla doesn't have a clear distinction between the client and server as the older version I have used since 2016. When you say 'regular Filezilla client', such an indicator is obvious to you but not to me. I spent a few hours trying to apply a config that worked. The use of the administrator port was just the last of all attempts. It connected and reported same. It connected to a server, the intended response. Most of the forum threads and help refer to earlier builds and don't apply now. The new version that auto-installed didn't pick up an existing working config. I'm sorry to report that the FileZilla project broke it for me. I found a workaround: I'm using a previous Server build. I didn't have to change anything: it worked immediately the service was started. The pictures show a female blue-tit inside a nest box under IR illumination, so black and white, and during the brief periods she is foraging, nine eggs, the male visiting to feed. Enjoy!

Lovely birds.

Nothing has changed in this regard, all the terminology is still exactly the same.

This shouldn't make any difference at all.

I'm sure you are right. That it's all in a different place and not clear to me which are client versus server settings is the issue.

That was my unrequited hope.

I thought the nestbox had been abandoned but instead, FZ 0.9.60 had been remotely uninstalled on 24th. I put it back but the uninstall caused the reload to fail under the same settings that failed in FZ 3. to now fail in FZ 0.9. Here's the crossover in the log.

Successful logon, password, IP restrictions, port, so I'm going to posit that all the settings were the same.

Looks like the configured FTP user (Birdbox) does not have the necessary permissions for writing to that location. Please check the "Shared folders" [sic] configuration of user birdbox. You need to have the following File permissions: List, Read, Write (for writing) and Delete (for overwriting).

Again, FileZilla Server vs. FileZilla are two totally different software products. The former provides files over FTP, while the latter accesses files over FTP.
