What do you mean? There are three access levels:
1. Disabled - no access
2. Read - read only access
3. Write - full write access

FTP accounts can delete files when they have Write access. Write access without Delete is not possible.

"Write access without Delete is not possible."

Interestingly, in the previous version 0.9.x it was possible. The unavailability of this feature still keeps me in the version 0.9.

"FTP accounts can delete files when they have Write access."

..and some of us would like to set the (optional) impossibility of deleting. The way it worked before.

access levels:
1. Disabled - no access
2. Read-read only access
3. Write - full write access
4. Write and disabled delete

Point 4 made FileZilla unique from other FTP servers. Without this point, FileZilla is basically about nothing.

I'm stating the facts and am not involved in development at all. That doesn't mean that I necessarily do agree with the decisions. Because I don't.
I also want the detailed configuration coming back, at least as a special power user custom configuration. FileZilla Server has lost big potential in that field, comparable to Mozilla dumbing down Firefox. Not my fault if some hipsters/millenials/boomers are too stupid and have to be protected from themselves.

This configuration not being available is an intentional decision made by the devs. They thought the old system was "too complicated". My @55.

Perhaps I misunderstand.
  • If many users all have write access to the same directory (folder?), then all of them can delete files from that folder.
  • If each user has a separate directory, then that user would be able to delete files in that directory, but no others, correct?
So the goal is to have many users write into the same directory, but only have delete capability on their own files? I can imagine a number of scenarios where that would be quite useful. (and where creating and maintaining multiple directories would be a chore.)

One of the main reasons is backup. If I back up to FTP and there is no copy of FTP, the backups can easily be lost in the event of an attack. If deleting is disabled, this issue is resolved. I can upload a backup, but I don't have the option to delete it. This is exactly what made FileZilla unique. This single bonus of exceptionality with the new version loses. It's a good backup protection against ransomware. This feature is actually the only reason I use FileZilla.

boco: Nobody blames you. Decisions can be wrong. That is why we are pushing for these decisions to change. :) There are plenty of FTP servers. It is possible that the purpose is to bury a good project. By the way, the settings were more user-friendly in the old version.

There are plenty of FTP servers.
I have not discovered any FTP servers for Windows that are "totally free" besides FileZilla and Windows (Part of IIS, Yech).
Would appreciate pointers to other servers so that I can compare them.

Nowhere do I see me writing anything about "completely free". A few dollars for support won't kill me. Personally, I use FTP on IIS - a link to Active Directory, etc. In one corporate backup network http://www.pablosoftwaresolutions.com/h ... erver.html - it is a simple trivial system without users, it can disable file deletion (as old FileZilla), it is not necessary to configure and install it. FileZilla for data backup, but still only version 0.9.x.

But you want to catch my words. The content of this discussion is completely different. Nowhere do I claim that FileZilla is bad. I'm just trying to make FileZilla the best. I don't care about anything else. Either I can do something about it or I can't. Sure, no one's forcing me to use it. It is up to the authors to decide whether they want to hear the pleas or not.
