Local host

#1 Post by iban1967 » 2022-11-28 08:53

Hello, I just downloaded filezilla in order to use the FTP protocol. It's still obscure and I ask myself a lot of questions. Already, I wonder what I can do and can't do: it can't be invented!!! I wonder for example if it is possible to have a local host different from my pc at home. Is it possible to use my seedbox? Thank you for your enlightening answer :-}

Of course. All you need is a device to run an FTP server on. FTP servers do not have to be exposed to the Internet, but can be LAN only. By the way, the same is true for all the other web protocols and services, too. You can have a local web server, local FTP, SFTP, WebDAV servers and even a local cloud server (remember, there is no Cloud, it's just someone else's computer). Of course, how useful these are in a local environment, is a different story.

If the seedbox can run FileZilla Server (probably the Linux flavor) you can use that one. To my knowledge, it's just a NAS primarily used for torrenting.

Ok thank you for the answer. if I understood correctly, I have to install my seedbox with filezilla server as local host? And then that I connect in FTP with the server with which I want to make transfers?

You just install it as normal, but ignore the "router port forwarding" part completely. Without port forwards, the server is available in LAN only.

_____
However, don't confuse "local host" aka LAN host with "localhost". The latter term is reserved for dealing with the very same machine only, kind of a loopback.

LAN hosts use the following address ranges: 10.0.0.1 - 10.255.255.254, 172.16.0.1 - 172.31.255.254 and 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.255.254 for IPv4 and fd00/8 for IPv6.

Localhost just uses 127.0.0.1 - 127.255.255.254 for IPv4 and ::1/128 for IPv6. Any server that listens on localhost only is not accessible from any other machine.

For connection to the LAN-only server, use its LAN IP address (or the NETBIOS name aka computer name in network). You cannot use any domain names (or URLs) as domain names are usually only associated to public Internet IPs.

No. Many people get this wrong, but this login has nothing to do with the later client connections. This first login is only for interconnecting the administration interface (the visible part) to the server engine (which is running as service invisibly in the background). There is simply no other easy way of communicating with services as TCP/IP.
Here, just leave the default information in, check the "Automatically connect bla bla" box and hit OK. Next time, the two parts will then interconnect automatically.

Once being connected to the actual server, the real setup starts. There is some documentation here: https://wiki.filezilla-project.org/Documentation . For totally lost users, there is also a comprehensive manual, up for purchase.

thank you. Ok, I think that I was not clear in my question and that the problems of vocabulary (localhost...) do not help anything. I will try to rephrase my question. On filezilla client, I easily managed to connect in ftp with my seedbox. The latter is therefore on the right side of my screen and on the left there is the hard drive of my pc. No problem. But can we configure all this so that the seedbox is on the left of the screen so that I send my files from my seedbox to remote hosting?

No, direct server to server connections and transfers are not supported in FileZilla. They are simply incompatible with FTPS.
