Feature Request: I just need the shortcut resolution back

#1 Post by ElllisD » 2004-12-12 14:23

I want to run the home dir local on a 24/7 machine, and have shortcuts in there pointing to the same dir tree on another machine on my network. The problem is the hostname changes depending on who's using it. Here we can't afford 2 (good) computers, so we use dual-boot instead of user logons cuz Windows won't do some system-wide settings on a per-user basis. (Plus, when I have to reinstall my xp, they dont lose their setup, etc)
if its do-able id greatly appreciate it.
thanks

I still don't see why exectly you need shortcut resolving here.

So you're saying that you're FTP server points to another machine that might change hostnames? Certainly you can ensure that the other machine always uses the same IP address. That should be good enough. The shortcuts don't buy you anything.

ok. Ill be the first to admit that I dunno networking too well.
If I make the shares all have the same name, is there a way to point FZ to something like \\192.168.x.xx\Share rather than \\HostA\A Share or \\HostB\B Share?
