Sourceforge gone rogue?

#1 Post by zkov » 2013-12-09 21:17

I'm a bit shocked at the behavior of Sourceforge. I've used the repository and recommended it for years but no more.

I caught their package of Filezilla today thankfully, but I'm wondering about exactly which 7zip and VLC I have installed on my other PC at the moment.

I don't pretend to know the relationship between this project and that site, and if my post should fall on deaf ears so be it, but if anyone else cares, here's my one and only review on Web Of Trust:

Thanks,
Ron

Nobody has gone rogue, this is a mutual agreement between SourceForge and me. The installer may present offers for third-party software, however nothing is being installed without your explicit consent. You do not have to agree to any of the presented offers in order to install FileZilla.

I'm not an expert on these matters, and I know the world runs on cash, but I don't understand this large of a discrepancy:

It's the Sourceforge offer-based installer provided by ASK. This ... thing will download the true installer later.

If you click the "Show all download options" link before download you will get the true installer right away.

It is not my intention to belabor the point or to pester the men responsible for the best FTP client I'm aware of, but where is the option you speak of? What chance do
our non tech savvy friends and family have of finding it? Are you not tired of removing spyware from their PCs? I know I am.

One does not simply walk into SourceForge!

Of course my hint is for downloading from filezilla-project.org. You can bookmark the following link:

ok you made the choice of ASK... How could you think it is a good idea to allow this SF installer.

It is the last time I download the FileZilla server and client. I'm going to find an alternative.
And I stop to suggest this tool to my customers.
You are just killing your product...

I'm leaving FileZilla. Lead dev has chosen to cash out and harm users instead of being a good net citizen. I have also pushed my various Dev Ops teams away from it too for our projects. I've also gotten the word out in my deep network of developers as a San Francisco engineer, and it's making waves.

Good bye FileZilla, I hope the cash was worth harming users.
