When you open a doc in ms word 2010 that was created in an previously edition of word,
Compatibility Mode is turned on, and you see Compatibility Mode in the title bar of the document window.

Never start with the Off Topic or General forums. :D

Oh yes, I had to remove the link from your signature since it leads to a page with commercial contents. Those aren't allowed here.

Bookstore

Buying and selling. That's pretty much commercial. I'll let the decision to the forum admin.

Definitely commercial. Apart from cash offers and buying/selling stuff, the site has the typical ailment of a commercial website: All presentation coupled with lack of content.

I can only repeat: For problems with Microsoft software you need to ask Microsoft.

You could "save as" the old version, in text format...then import or paste the text version into the MS word 2010 document.

that should do it.
