Filezilla.xml~ Couldn't Be Removed

#1 Post by K9BM » 2014-07-27 16:58

Every time I exit Filezilla after connecting to a server somewhere, I get an error dialog that says "File 'C:\Users\My Name\AppData\Roaming\filezilla.xml~' couldn't be removed (error 0: the operation completed successfully.)" Is this an error or isn't it--I can't tell from the wording!

So I go into that directory and delete the file filezilla.xml~ which I guess is some sort of temp file? It deletes just fine for me. Then I restart Filezilla and connect to a server and then exit Filezillla. Immediately I see the filezilla.xml~ file being written and the error dialog pops up

What is this file? What does this error mean (if it really is an error)? And why can I remove the file but Filezilla can't (even though it can obviously WRITE the file to begin with)? Running Filezilla 3.9.0.1. Thanks....

Is your home directory located on a network share?

Is there a third-party program scanning, indexing or syncing files in your home directory?

No, and no.

Same "error" here started about a week ago. I can manually delete that file myself so it definitely isn't locked by another process.

There's a note in the version history for v3.9.0 (Beta-2) that says "Removed spurious error message when closing FileZilla." I don't know if it's the same error, but I downgraded to v3.8.1 and the problem went away....

This is puzzling. Why would it display a success message in form of an error dialog?

Please try the latest nightly from https://filezilla-project.org/nightly.php

OK, I installed the 7/28 nightly and no exit error, the problem went away. Then I reinstalled the normal 3.9.0.1 release and the problem still did not return. I really don't like coincidences, so I'm not sure what to make of this. When I reinstalled 3.9.0.1 over top of the nightly build did a fix remain, or is it in fact a coincidence?

Looks like a coincidence.

It would be good if user w411 who reported the same problem a few posts earlier would try the same fix to rule out a coincidence. I'll post if the problem returns....

I'm having the same problem.
I've just installed the nightly build (07/28), and the error disappeared.

Then reinstalled 3.9.0.1 again, and the error popped up again.

There is no change of functionality in the code that deals with the temporary file. The error message should still be there.

This problem started with the 3.0.9.1 release, tried a couple of nightly builds fixed the problem.

But the clue was from botg (Is there a third-party program scanning, indexing or syncing files in your home directory?)

I use Carbonite, I removed the Filezilla folder in the AppData Roaming from the Carbonite backup and now it seems to work

Update:

Jumped the gun, with the 7/28/14 build, if you started and closed Filezilla the message was gone, with the 3.0.9.1 release you got it all the time.

But then I ftp'd a file with the 7/28/14 build then closed Filezilla, the message is back. UGH!!!

I'd really like to address this error message without reverting to an older version (because older versions nag for updates, even if auto update is off in the settings).

Sorry for a dumb question but is there a native win32/64 nightly build? On this page, I only see a cygwin nightly build for Windows:

Thanks!
Craig
