This installer may include bundled offers (Not what you are looking for?)

#1 Post by scootergrisen » 2016-06-17 13:59

So i go to https://filezilla-project.org/download. ... form=win64 to download FileZilla for Windows. And what do i see...
This installer may include bundled offers.
Why oh why would you ever want to do that to the users.
You dont even inform the user if it contains additional unwanted software and what software that might be, just that it might, and who know what it is. Surprise! extra software for you.

And then you have.
Check below for more options.

...

Not what you are looking for?

Show additional download options
Which is like the most inaccurate way to inform the user that there is a way to get FileZilla without additional unwanted software.

The link says:
Download
FileZilla Client

Then under the link is:
This installer may include bundled offers. Check below for more options.

Maybe better to make it part of the link so like:
Download
FileZilla Client
(May include bundled offers)

Reason: Modified link to unsupported FileZilla version.

The installer clearly displays what the offered software is, the user can either agree or disagree to the offer. Nothing is downloaded or installed the user doesn't agree to.

How can you say nothing is downloaded that the users does not agree to when the users is not informed what the download contains?

Because it asks first, then downloads if the user agrees.

So i guess the installer with "This installer may include bundled offers" does not accutually include any additional software.
Maybe it tries to make network connection to some server and download unknown software?

Only if the user agrees to it.

So i guess the installer does not actually "include bundled offers" as the text says.

It includes the offer, but not what is offered.

I did not seem to get any offer when i tried.
Perhaps the installed tries to make connection to some server and if no connection if made the offer will not come?
But i don't like that the installer contacts anyone and sends infomation of what i install and when if that is the case.

The offer-enabled Windows installer only contacts filezilla-project.org to fetch the offer data, no information about your system is transmitted back to the server to display the offer.

While I could see which IP addresses have run the installer, it surely correlates highly with the IP addresses for downloads:
Step 1: Download installer; Step 2: Execute installer.

For typical downloads, the amount of information your browser broadcasts in every HTTP(S) request speaks volumes.

I don't see the installer trying to make any connections.
Maybe the installer will only try if there is a working connection?

Hello,

As a little developer also distributing free applications , 'pay per install bundles' looks like an interesting way to monetize a bit our applications.

Of course, due to respects to our loyal users we don't want malwares and/or intrusive ads or notifications..

Unfortunately it is not so easy to find out the right/proper ppi network that will provide this kind of bundles...

In my opinion, Filezilla developer has made a good choice, the additionnal offers are properly bundled into a single installer binary, users requests concerning the discard / addition of a bundle are not confusing at all and there is no kind of unwanted notifications or redirections.

If it can be publicy revealed i would be interested to know what is the ppi network you've been using ?
i would like to use it for my own apps. :)

Thank you and keep on the good work.

Ozzy

@Tim,

How can I tell what exactly was installed in the bundle? I "skipped" the FireFox offer, but it looks like Chromium was installed. And Safari popped up and loaded a screen that said, "Thank you for installing."

Is there a list so I know what's been added?

Safari? I presume you're using macOS. If you have accidentally agreed to an offer you can sort the two Applications directories by modification date to see what has been installed.
