I was surprised to see an ad when I updated Filezilla.

But I guess it helps a project of this very high quality to keep going...

Where exactly did you see the "ad"? There are only some offers in the default installer (that you can easily avoid, btw.). Updating through the built-in feature does never show anything.

Actually yes, in some countries sponsored messages are shown on the update dialog. See https://filezilla-project.org/sponsored_updates.php

The messages are obtained together with the usual update information, no additional data is sent to the server nor are any additional requests made.
