FileZilla macOS Auto Update

#1 Post by olli » 2017-02-25 17:04

Currently FileZilla downloads the new version, but doesn't "install" (so move it automatically to Applications and remove older one) it. Could it be possible to implement autoupdate functionality?

Sadly not easily. Implementing it correctly is quite challenging.

I second this (and properly bumping this). I've noticed I find it very annoying to repeat the installation steps every three weeks.
Isn't it possible to download the raw .app file, copy it automatically to the /Application folder and restart FileZilla?

I refuse to believe this. I am a Software Engineer as well and I know that the FTP Client you built implements a lot of the features you could use to build an automatic update system. This is literally the most annoying thing about FileZilla. I have been looking into other FTP clients because of this problem alone.

You can purchase FileZilla Pro on the Mac App Store, the store takes care of updates.

Agreed. The current way of updating FileZilla is not ideal.

It's good to know that FileZilla Pro has another way of updating.
If you managed to come through the review process with FileZilla Pro, wouldn't it also be possible to offer the default FileZilla through the App Store?

Technically? Yes. Practically it's a nightmare though, lots of manual things that need to be done for every release.

OK, I already had a feeling that it wouldn't be that attractive for you.

People like you are the reason Malware is as successful as it is. There are reasons why authors maintain their software. Usually new versions fix security problems, and Malware creators rely upon users like yourself who do not update and put themselves (and others) at risk. Most Botnets spread through Exploits that are long fixed.
