Migrating Filezilla server users/groups to new VM
Hi I am an FTP newbie so please excuse my ignorance. I read the FAQ and browsed the forums and I was unable to find a topic that answered my question below. If there is I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction.
I just took over an FTP server that is managed with Filezilla server. The FTP server is on a VM running Windows XP, and I have spun up a new VM running Windows 7 to use as the FTP server. I would like to migrate the current users and groups to the new server with out having to manually reenter approximately 150 users. Is there a way to accomplish this?
Like I mentioned new to FTP servers so if there is more detail that you need please let me know, and thank you for any assistance that can be provided.

Re: Migrating Filezilla server users/groups to new VM
It's actually very easy: Just move the "FileZilla Server.xml" file from the old FZ Server install directory to the new one. FileZilla Server does not integrate into Windows, and it does not use the registry. Thus there are no further dependencies.
In case you use FTPS and have an SSL certificate configured, you might move that *.crt file, too. And care for the configured resources, they might be different on the new VM.

Re: Migrating Filezilla server users/groups to new VM
Hey boco,
Thanks for the quick reply. I copied the "FileZilla Server.xml" file from the old FZ Server and replaced the file on the new server. I closed and reopened FZ on the new server and checked the user and group and the "testuser" account I created is all that I see.
Additional information -
Uninstalled FZ on new server and reinstalled moved .xml file with all user and group data still does not display
old server FZ is version 0.9.41
new server FZ is version 0.9.47
Decided to copy the entire FileZilla Server folder to the new server just to see what would happen and got the follow error message:
Protocol warning: Server version mismatch: Server version is 0.9.71.0, interface version is 0.9.65.0
Protocol error: Protocol version mismatch: Server protocol version is 0.1.16.0, interface protocol version is 0.1.13.0
Connection to server closed
Are there any known issues with the different versions of FZ?

Re: Migrating Filezilla server users/groups to new VM
FileZilla Server consists of two parts: The invisible server engine running as a background service, and the Administration interface that you can see. My guess is that you only closed the admin interface. To restart the server you need to restart the background service!
Best practice is:
1. Stop the service.
2. Copy over "FileZilla Server.xml".
3. Start the service again.

Thank you Boco. Stopping the services prior to copying the .xml file then starting the services worked perfectly. I really appreciate your assistance!

Re: Migrating Filezilla server users/groups to new VM
I must be doing something wrong. I stopped the service on my new server. Then copied the Filezilla Server Interface.xml file from my old server. Restarted the service. Opened the FileZilla Server Interface. No users.
Re: Migrating Filezilla server users/groups to new VM
You must copy the file "FileZilla Server.xml", not the one that ends with "Interface".
