FileZilla crash 3.44.1

#1 Post by boco » 2019-08-12 22:39

I have a problem with FileZilla crashing as soon as clicking the Site Manager icon.

Preconditions:
1. FileZilla 3.44.1 64bit, running under Windows 10 1809.
2. The crash only occurs if you have an fzdefaults.xml file in the program directory. The file must contain one or more predefined sites (valid <Servers></Servers> section).

The crash dialog's text is:

Code: Select all

---------------------------
filezilla.exe - Application Error
---------------------------
The instruction at 0x00007FFFDE1AFFFD referenced memory at 0xFFFFFFFFFFFF0008. The memory could not be read.

Click on OK to terminate the program
---------------------------
OK

Oh lovely, another bug in wxWidgets and/or Windows. Hard to tell who's at fault here.

My server entries are all OK. Moving the blocks to the normal sitemanager.xml file for the time being avoids the crash. Plus, no crash at all under Windows 7.

Could you reproduce?

Crash here, as soon as I click on "Open the Site Manager".
FileZilla FTP Client has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
Then I can close the program, and the same error again when I re-open it.

Using Win7, which just downloaded some updates this morning. Shortly after the Win7 updates, FileZilla prompted me to update to 3.44.1 and this is when the trouble started. Of course, restarted many times.

Please assist, as life without FileZilla is hopeless :-(

@boco: No, I cannot reproduce the issue not happening under Windows 7. Are you using 32bit or 64bit Win7?

The root cause still eludes me. As for a workaround, get a round of sleep and try the nightly once you get up.

Using 64bit Win7, here. Both Pro and Standard (with separate configs) work fine.

Odd, on my Windows 7 64bit I can reproduce the crash in the original report, and as such not the not-crashing addendum in your follow-up.

Using Win7 Home Premium 64-bit.

I must specify that after this morning's Windows updates, FileZilla worked OK. I was using it to upload some of my sites to a new host.

Then FileZilla prompted me to update. And this is when FileZilla started crashing as soon as clicking the Site Manager icon.

Crash is only with latest version. Probably one of the recent enhancements, maybe the multi-selection.

Yes, my FileZilla under Windows 7 64bit does not crash. The only difference is that I don't have the July 2019 SecOnly patch installed. Maybe it's the one causing the issue (Full CU is cumulative, but SecOnly isn't).

Another observation worth noting (no idea if related): I usually have selected "Show Site Manager on startup". When I disabled this setting (for a test), at the next start, the "What's new in FileZilla 3.44.1" was shown (only once). Obviously, the "Show Site Manager on startup" selection did clash with the whatsnew dialog somehow, or at least prevented proper updating of the "don't show again" entry in the configuration. AFAIR, the whatsnew dialog did not show at all after updating to 3.44.1.

I recently updated to v 3.44.1 and ran into issues. The issue occurred on three Win 10 devices.
The xml config files were located in C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Filezilla\
I experienced issues with the filezilla.xml and sitemanager.xml files.

The closing tag for <FileZilla3> was not formatted correctly.
I edited the closing tags and all worked successfully.

That's an entirely different issue. Settings file corruption is usually caused by not properly shutting down your computer.

...and again. Welcome dialog does not show at all if Site Manager is loaded on startup. Several related entries in filezilla.xml (like "Greeting version" or "Last automatic update version (Pro)") are not updated. Only when starting once without Site Manager on startup, then they are.
