3.46.3 Does not run on Mac Catalina

#1 Post by SteveZilla » 2020-01-28 16:38

I'm running MacOS Catalina (10.15.2) and have used Filezilla for years. Today the less-then-current version I was using crashed so I downloaded the free version for Mac 3.46.3 but can't get it to run. From the download file, I can extract the .tar file using WinZip, then from that extract the "package" named Filezilla (again using Winzip) but the Filezilla icon has the ominous "no" sign on it (circle with a cross bar). When I nonetheless move it into my Applications I can see it in LaunchPad but when I try to run it it says "Application cannot be opened."

I also tried 3.46.2 and got the same results.

Any ideas?

Do not use Winzip to extract it. Winzip damages application bundles.

Wow. I used the Archive Utility on my Mac and it worked just fine. Thanks for the quick response!!!

(BTW I've never really felt comfortable with WinZip, and even less so now. Any recommendations on a Zip program that will create encrypted zip's?)

My favorite compression utility is 7-Zip. Unfortunately, it is only for Windows. However, there is a compressor for MacOS, based on 7-Zip, named keka. You might take a look at it, seems to be free.

Hello. Is there any update for Catalina? My Filezilla app cannot be used since update to 3.46.3. Did not work with Catalina version 10.15.3

I though Catalina only run application with 64 bit version. On download page Filezilla, it is 32 bit. I wish, there will be a 64 bit version Filezilla.

Thanks

FileZilla for macOS has been exclusively 64bit for many years now.

no it's not. So why I got the files with the name like this: FileZilla_3.46.3_macosx-x86.app.tar from download menu?
And this is not working with Catalina 10.15.3

Because x86 is only the name of the platform (Intel x86). It has nothing to do with the architecture, x86 does NOT automatically mean 32bit!

The MacOS download is not labelled as 64bit because there's no need to do so. Essentially, you do not have any choice, as MacOS is exclusively 64bit. The download offers the only version of FileZilla supported by MacOS.
Windows and Linux are different because they still offer 32bit support. Thus, the difference in architectures still needs to be put into the file name. 32bit builds for Windows and Linux will be discontinued soon, to my knowledge.

As to the "not working", what are you using to extract the app bundle? Third-party utilities are known to corrupt the bundle, but OS tools should work.
