FileZilla update failed

#1 Post by ilens » 2020-03-19 09:47

When I try to install FileZilla_3.47.2.1_win64-setup.exe it goes through to the point where it starts installing the files and then crashes with
Error opening the file for writing
C:\Program files\FileZilla FTP Client\filezilla.exe

I am using an administrator account and even used "Run as administrator" to start the installer

If you already run the installer as Administrator, then, there's only one other reason for failure. Please check in the Taks Manager, if there is still one or more "FileZilla.exe" process(es) open. Personally, I have this problem for many versions, but only on 32bit systems, where FileZilla.exe simply fails to close completely.

I'ts fixed

Task manager didn't show any FIleZilla task
The Apps Settings didn't show FileZilla so I can't uninstall it
Program files had a "FileZilla FTP Client" folder containing FileZilla Exe and an Uninstall.exe - that showed 3.47.2.1

I ran the uninstall and rebooted, and then ran the installer again - all now OK
Thanks

I've tried to update to 3.47.2.1, as prompted when I opened the previous version client 3.47.1.

The bz2 file downloads automatically to my Downloads folder. I double click it to expand it to the Filezilla....app. I've also tried just clicking the Install button in the popup prompt telling me there's a new version.

They both seem to do the same thing - expand the .bz2 file to create a file FileZilla_3.47.2.1_macosx-x86.app in my downloads folder. When I try to run that, either from the Applications folder to which I moved it, or from the Downloads folder itself, I get the error message:

"You can’t open the application “FileZilla_3.47.2.1_macosx-x86.app” because it may be damaged or incomplete."

I've also tried deleting the old version the Applications folder, and renaming the new on to just Filezilla.app

Tried the download part then expand or install four times, with the same error each time.

Any suggestions please for how to fix it?

What are you using for expanding the bz2 archive? Please use the OS tools, because third-party tools like WinZIP will corrupt the application bundle.

I'm having a very hard time with these updates that keep popping up when I try to use FileZilla. I agree to do the update, it crashes and deletes the current installation. Last time I even went to the trouble to purchase the product so it would work. Its never worked for me since then.

Now, today a few weeks later, I have tried to open it again and it says it needs an update, fails the install and then the old version is gone. I've done all the things mentioned, run as admin, clear the processes etc in task manager. I'm just a web designer and so this is extremely frustrating that I have never been able to use the program for weeks now, despite having actually paid for it.

Can anyone help me figure out how to install this and stop the update requests? Thank you.

1. Set update check to "Never".
2. On the Debug page in the settings, enable "Show Debug menu".
3. In the new Debug menu on the top, select "Clear autoupdate data".
