Filezilla not connecting with a laptop
Hi:
I connect just fine with filezilla on my desktop PC, but by using the exact configuration, it can't connect with my new laptop, even though I disabled the Windows firewall.
Is there something I must do with a laptop for filezilla to work on it that I don't know about? All browsers work fine on it.
Would someone please tell me how I can get the laptop to connect also?
Thanks

What does it say in the message log?
Re: Filezilla not connecting with a laptop
Thanks very much for your reply.
This is what it returns:
Status: Connecting to sftp.ipage.com:2222...
Response: fzSftp started, protocol_version=11
Command: open "billyjoe@sftp.ipage.com" 2222
Error: Connection timed out after 60 seconds of inactivity
Error: Could not connect to server
Status: Waiting to retry...
I also tried with regular FTP on port 21 and connecting to the internet with cable and with WIFI. In all cases it makes no difference.

Re: Filezilla not connecting with a laptop
If FileZilla.exe and fzsftp.exe can make free outside connections to the Internet, there shouldn't be any problem. The default network profile for "modern" Windows versions is "Public", but that should only affect incoming connections.
What you could try to do is shutting down and disabling the ALG (Application Layer Gateway) service. It is known for sabotaging (S)FTP.

Thank you also boco.
I disabled ALG, but it made no difference. I still get the same message.

Re: Filezilla not connecting with a laptop
What do you see on https://filezilla-project.org/conntest.php and do you see the same on both machines?
Re: Filezilla not connecting with a laptop
I don't understand. I get the same 3 successful connection imagses on both machines, but by using the exact configuration, the laptop doesn't connect to any site.

Re: Filezilla not connecting with a laptop
The conntest succeeding means that at the very least you have a working setup that can access HTTPS websites over both IPv4 and IPv6. Doesn't necessarily mean other protocol work though.
How are the devices connected to the Internet? Are they both wired, both using wireless, or are they using different types of network connection? In case of different connection types, have you tried to change the connection type?

Re: Filezilla not connecting with a laptop
My desktop PC is wired and has always made all connections.
My new HP laptop, however, does not connect to any site, ftp nor sftp, wired or wireless.
Does anything need be done to enable the laptop to make ftp connections?

Re: Filezilla not connecting with a laptop
Is there any OEM crapware or additional security software installed (including so-called "trials")?

Re: Filezilla not connecting with a laptop
No, boco. I reinstalled Windows and there is no security software installed at all.
I also made sure there is an exception for Filezilla in Windows firewall.

Re: Filezilla not connecting with a laptop
Check in Device Manager, if any funky features are enabled for the network adaptor(s), like Jumbo frames, Teaming etc. Otherwise, I'm out of ideas.

Here's a screenshot of device manager. Any hints of the connection problem?

Re: Filezilla not connecting with a laptop
This sounds like something on the laptop is blocking the communications -- because you've noted that the failure occurs whether wired or not. The only way to verify that is to take the laptop to another network and attempt connections.billyjoe wrote: ↑2022-11-25 19:58My desktop PC is wired and has always made all connections.

Windows Firewall most likely the issue -- one option is to disable it completely for testing (be sure to disable all profiles "public" and "private" and "domain" for testing) - but be sure to re-enable afterwards (I note that you have already tried this -- but make sure all profiles or the firewall in it's entirety are shut off for testing).
This is most likely un-related, but linking just in case it helps --

Re: Filezilla not connecting with a laptop
As you suggested, I tried making FTP connections using another wired network
with Windows firewall completely disabled in the laptop, but it still will not connect.
This proves there's something about the laptop that's causing this issue - but what?
Also, there's no way https://filezilla-project.org/conntest.php can connect with filezilla
on my laptop with an underscore before and after the filezilla folder.
The page seems to have three static filezilla logo images - no matter what!
