I'm logged in as root, so there should be no problems permissions-wise. Also, connecting to a Unix server so there should be no problems with strange characters (e.g. '<', ':', etc.)

It looks like the server does not know how to create directories. It replies with a '502 Command not supported' in response to the MKD kommand.

I think I've identified the problem; my ftp server was being started with lesser permissions, and I was just not paying enough attention.
