Missing mingwm10.dll

#1 Post by Dirtnapper » 2008-03-01 17:07

I have filezilla installed on two different computers, latest update, but will not run, missing mingwm10.dll. I have re-installed but that is not correcting it. Thanks.

Where did you download FileZilla?

I have checked it just to be sure: Both the installer as well the zip archive contain a copy of mingwm10.dll, so whatever the problem is, it is caused by third-party program on your system.

I encountered the same problem, both with versions 3.0.7.1 and 3.0.8.1 of Filezilla.
In my Programs folder, I found two different Filezilla folders; one named "C:\Programme\FileZilla FTP Client" (the current one, containing version 3.0.8.1 and including mingwm10.dll), and another one named "C:\Programme\FileZilla" (obviously still containing most(?) version 3.0.7.1 files, but not the dll file).
I then deleted the second folder, and was able to start Filezilla after that.
I guess you should as well be able to solve the problem by uninstalling Filezilla completely, deleting any remains of it in the programs folder, then reinstalling it. Maybe someone can try this?
To me it looks like either your installer or the program itself messed it up, not any "3rd party software"!

The installation folder has been 'Filezilla FTP Client' since the first 3.x version. There are 2 possible causes:

1. You previously installed over an old 2.x version, or
2. Something on your system messed up and broke the path at the first space.

I've been having this issue also. Currently with v3.1.6 and also with the previous version.

On some occasions the file is missing and other times the dll is in the same directory as the exe but can't be found for some reason. In the case where the file is there I copy it, delete the old one and rename the copy with the original name and it then works again. I have a backup sitting in the folder now so I can just restore the file without having to reinstall if the dll goes missing again.

This is under windows xp pro sp3 btw. Good luck tracking this one down... very strange.

I searched around a bit more and found that it may be an installer issue. Turns out one of the filezilla installers (I've updated a few times) did indeed create a new folder for the program (Filezilla FTP Clent) without removing the old one (Filezilla). It did however overwrite the add/remove programs link. I updated my shortcuts to point to the newer version (3.2.2.1 now) and removed the old directory. Hopefully this resolves the issue.

Great program BTW!

Every version of Filezilla 3 installs by default to 'Filezilla FTP Client'. It is to prevent installing over an existing Filezilla 2 version. If you did that you've messed up.
The best would be to install clean.

As far as I can remember all I've ever done is update when prompted and I believe that any decent installer should contend with all possible "mess ups" as part of the installation process.

I'll just get the zipped release next time.

Then you probably never had Filezilla 2. FZ2 didn't have an update check.

It does offer you to install into a different directory than Filezilla 2. If you ignore that and force to install into the old directory anyway, what should it do?

Quite possible.

In the event that a previous installation exists the option to select a directory should not be presented.

The Filezilla 3 Installer does exactly that: In case of a prior installation it offers you to update.

As FZ2 and FZ3 are entirely independent from each other (they can co-exist in different directories) blocking of path is not possible when upgrading FZ2->FZ3.

Like you said, I probably never had v2 installed.

I still find the whole issue with mingwm10.dll quite strange. Hopefully it doesn't happen again but if it does I'll try to provide some more useful feedback next time.

The mingwm10.dll is in the FZ Client directory, but it's only 6656 bytes. @botg: Could this be linked statically?
