ftp://127.0.0.1

#1 Post by pinnaclefire » 2008-05-03 18:34

I entered the url ftp://127.0.0.1 from my computer (not behind a router) and entered user name and password and connected to my files with no problems. Tried it from a remote computer and it keeps popping up with the log on screen.

127.0.0.1 is localhost, it's a loopback address and always means the very same machine as the one you're typing that in.

Well,

1st: It's all in the guide, all you need to do. And unfortunately 99% of the people don't read it. You're one of the 1%. Congratz.
2nd: That said, You need to use the external* IP of the server machine. A DynDNS account may help.
3rd: Firewalls are devices (or software) that need to be configured. Ports opened, essentially FTP listening port and Passive port range.

*127.0.0.1 is not an external IP, 10.0.0.x, 192.168.x.x are neither

To access your pc from a remote system outside the network you will need to locate your external ip address which should show if you do an ipconfig /all from a cmd prompt if you are directly connected to your modem. Otherwise check the router or hub etc. In addition, ports 20 and 21 need to be open for external access.

I had already set up a DynDNS which is pinnaclefire.ftpaccess.cc it comes up with a IE error unable to connect. I have configured ports and added ports and filezilla to the exclusion list. And set up passive port range from 50000 to 51000.

If you're running the update utility from DynDNS to keep your IP current and opened ports this should work. Is there even some reaction of the server if someone attempts to connect?

At time of writing, pinnaclefire.ftpaccess.cc resolves to 70.178.13.224.

I installed the DynDNS updater and it gave me a green light. Still I can't access from outside.
