SFTP2 is slooow

#1 Post by osiris » 2005-02-19 12:26

Hi! I've got real problems getting FileZilla to give me good transfer speeds using SFTP2 between my Windows desktop computer (running FZ) and a Debian server. They are on the same LAN.

I know about the notice in the settings about a bug in Putty, but Putty's SFTP gives med excellent transfer speeds (and the bug is solved since September 2003). Is there any plan on fixing this in FileZilla? I like this program, but now I'm forced to use other solutions...

Very slow for me too. I get about 50K/s or so with FileZilla, but much closer to 1M/s with scp.

WinSCP3 also based on PuTTY's sftp, but it is very faster than FileZilla.

Interesting. Yesterday I downloaded a big file from my server, and the transfer speed was near the theoretical limit of my internet connection.

When I use filezilla to muck with my schools ftp server it comes down around the same speeds it does in sftp, or scp (300 - 400 k/s). Except filezilla doesn't spritz out and drop me all the time, and It's got a way better interface than sftp.

I've test it today for LAN with FileZilla 2.2.11 and WinSCP 3.7.4.
I transfer the same file from the same server to same client with different program.

File: php-4.2.2-17.2.src.rpm, Size: 11,159,362 bytes.

FileZilla 2.2.11 FTP mode: 3 seconds.
FileZilla 2.2.11 SFTP mode: 49 seconds.
WinSCP 3.7.4 SFTP mode: 8 seconds.

I transfer the same file twice for each mode. The SFTP performance for FileZilla is slower than WinSCP.

And here is another test I got from BBS:

Transfer a 20MB file from the same sftp server.

CuteFTP 6.0 Pro 137 KB/s
FileZilla 2.2.11 36X KB/s
WinSCP 3.7.4 3.3 MB/s
SSH Secure File Transfer Client 3.2.5 4.1 MB/s
Linux sftp 4.1 MB/s

I think it is a known bug with SSH2 for file transfers or something like that. I can't give a reference for this, but I have read or heard this somewhere.

Sftp is slow must be a bug in FileZilla

#9 Post by unixrsm » 2005-04-14 21:23

All of these posts are on target. There is something wrong with FileZilla not able to transfer files when using ssh.x. I downloaded winscp3 and it was much faster. Using 2.2.12c. Works great when in non-secure mode native speeds. However with ssh is very unacceptable. Users would not be willing to use this tool.

Wonder if this will get fixed?

FileZilla Speed 140K
WinScp 1540K

WinScp3 was 10 times faster in this mode.

I have also found a major difference in speed with FileZilla 2.2.18 compard to using the latest PUTTY 0.58 release.

If I upload a 20MB compressed file, compression disabled with FileZilla using SFTP via SSH2, it takes around 1 minute 20 seconds.

If I use FTP via FileZilla it takes 3 seconds. If i use either PSFTP or PSCP putty clients which FileZilla's SSH code is based off of, it takes around 7 seconds. I get the same speed with OpenSSH's scp/sftp about 7 seconds.

If FileZilla is using PUTTY's code, how come it is so slow? Will this be fixed in version 3? Are windows builds of version 3 available anywhere?

Thanks.
