Upload stops at 2GB or 2 hours

#1 Post by Helix » 2009-01-24 01:04

OK, this has got to be a really easy one that I'm just not seeing.

I am uploading a 6GB file to a Windows 2003 server where there is no user Quota and the file system is NTFS. I am the
administrator of both the FileZilla server and client machines.

- latest version of FileZilla server and FileZilla client are being used.
- fresh installs of both server and client
- the problem exists in Active or Passive mode
- the firewall, client, and server all have been configured to use the same 50 ports for Active mode
- The transfer gets to just under 2GB and then craps out.
- if I attempt to resume the transfer it immediately produces a '550 Permission denied' error.
- The file can be overwritten by the client, however, or
- the file can be deleted at the server the transfer successfully started again
- the transfer always stops at somewhere between 1.6GB and 1.9GB
- It takes almost exactly 2 hours to upload just under 2GB - is there a time limit??!!?
- I can successfully upload smaller files using the same user name and FTP root.
- only the user 'administrator' exists on the server
- it is not a domain controller
- no Active Directory, no IIS, no Windows routing, firewall, or ICM
- no proxy on either side
- NAT exist on both the server and the client side
- both client and server are configured with the static IP of the other
- Administrator has full control of the FTP root where the transfer is placing the file
- If you look at the rights on the file, all of the expected rights/permissions are on the file
- as soon as the transfer stops the client says that it "could not start transfer "
- however, during the transfer, you can see the stats as the bits flow, and there is a file of about 2GB on the server, so not only did the transfer start, the file was successfully written to the correct directory. The transfer just stopped too soon.

I don't get it. FTP is no mystery to me so I figure it is something blindingly simple. Help me out what am I doing wrong?

Looks like you've got a broken router and/or firewall between the client and the server that is dropping the control connection which has to be completely idle during transfers.

Fix the connection timeouts in your routers and firewalls. Something in the range of several weeks to months will make a good timeout value.

Alternately, or if you hardware cannot be reconfigured, you could allow upload resuming (file append). The client is attempting to do so with the APPE command, but you've configured the server to deny them.
