Just an update on my saga... I spent 5 hours on the phone with Verizon (modem) and Linksys (router) trying to just get the modem in full bridge mode and internet access. Turns out the modem is defective and they are sending a new one. One thing they did that might help you is to hook up the modem only and start the computer in Safe mode and try the config wizard. That way if you still get the "tainted" message it proves it must be the modem and there is no hidden firewall of which you might be unaware causing the problem. Also, Verizon was totally convinced that the modem was working in full bridge mode but it wasn't until we showed them the IP address that they admitted it must be a problem with the modem.

A modem can simply not modify your data in this way.
