Hi
I am getting the same problem.
Have been using Filezilla all morning without a problem.
Download IE8, just so that I can check a web page renders ok in it.
Filezilla no longer works.
I thought at first that IE8 had turned the windows firewall back on in true MS fashion but it hasn't.
I have disabled my own firewall and it still doesn't work.
It seem that the installation of IE8 has done something but I cannot find what.
Please can anyone help
Many thanks

So even when I have my firewall turned off, and Windows FW turned off, I still get test results saying that command was tainted by a firewall:

Connecting to probe.filezilla-project.org
Response: 220 FZ router and firewall tester ready
USER FileZilla
Response: 331 Give any password.
PASS 3.2.7.1
Response: 230 logged on.

I HAS THE ANSWER!
tell your clients not to enter a port number! just host and username and pass. thats whats working for me.

Issue appears to be something to do with the new versions of the client.
I was working OK for weeks then suddenly while using the client at a remote site I started getting this message - 5 minutes earlier had successfully transferred a file off the server.
Whatever I did I could not get it to work, then discovered it worked with no issue from an old test machine that had version 2.2.30a on it.
Went here http://www.oldapps.com/filezilla.php and downloaded that version, removed the new client and installed the old one I downloaded and everything is working again with no problems.

Would be interesting to know what is broken as it apparently just stopped working with no change on the machine I was using.

Somebody must have changed something, things don't break on their own.

I agree, however I was in Ottawa the middle of downloading a bunch of files from my home server in MA when I realized I already had them on my laptop so I terminated the transfer. Five minutes later I tried to connect to the home server again and got an econnrefused.
I rdp'd into a machine in London UK and triedto use it's client that had successfully connected to the home server 2 weeks ago it also got the econnrefused message. Today used the London client again and ran the network config and received a message about FW tainting. Thought maybe it was something to do with using xxxx.hoemdsn.org as the ip address rather than a real IP address so changed that to the correct address on the server and made no difference. Finally tried from a machine local to the ftp server and had no problem, that's when I looked at the version. Downgraded the London machine to the old version and connected immediately and the user over there has had no issues all day.
I am set up at the server end for passive mode on a non standard ftp port- got tired of hackers. Port is forwarded through a linksys switch to the exposed ftp server, it's actually a virtual server that is running on a host server inside a second linksys switch that has no ports forwarding.

Port is forwarded through a linksys switch
I hope this is a typo. Forwarding only one port is far from a correct config.
A switch does not forward ports. It's a router.
inside a second linksys switch that has no ports forwarding
All routers the FTP traffic comes through must be configured.

Sorry, not thinking. of course router
The first router's wan port is connected to a Westell versalink ADSL modem and one port of it is connected to the wan port of the 2nd router.
The Versalink is configured to pass ALL traffic to a single static address that is the first router - had to do do this as I could not find any way to make port forwarding work correctly on it.
For FTP the first router is actually set to forward port 8221 to 8320.
The server is set to listen on port 8221
Passive mode setting specify custom port range 8222 to 8320
Don't use external IP for local
xxxx.homedns.org for external server address where xxxx is the account name at dyndns

The 2nd router needs no port forwarding as no ftp traffic is allowed in.
The Host server has 2 nics one connected to the internal network configured for regulat tcp/ip and the other connected to the network between the 2 routers and configured for virtual machine network services.
The virtual server is configured to use the 2nd nic.

This setup has been working just fine for about 3 years and then suddenly stopped working with some clients in the last few months. The only thing I can see common about the clients that are not working is that they were all using client 3.2.4.1 or newer.
Reinstalling a very old client from a working client onto the non-working clients appears to have resolved the issue.

Looks like you got some broken router and/or firewall that fails to understand the MLSD command. Even though you have correctly configured the routers and FileZilla Server, some broken router and/or firewall still tampers with the connection and does crazy things with it. Getting explained at http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/Netwo ... a_sabotage

This was posted earlier today under Discussion topic: "It's the server's fault!".

Your mileage may vary but this was the fix for me:

Issue:
I have also been struggling with this problem for quite a while. The other day, I stumbled onto what's causing it, at least for my Solaris 10 FTP server. The user is able to connect to the ftp server but instead of getting their default directory listing, they receive error message "Could not read from transfer socket: ECONNABORTED - Connection aborted". This doesn't happen for all users and the one's it affects work sometimes. This was occuring with FileZilla 3.2.4.1 or Windows Internet Explorer, versions 7 & 8. The odd thing is that from a command line FTP utility, everything works fine. Another oddity is that the user is logged in and is capable of viewing listings in parent directories where read access is granted. I have an account on the server with quite a few files (280+) in my default directory and have experienced the same problem. On a hunch, I moved 10 files from my default directory into a sub directory called "FTP" and then set it as my default in /etc/passwd. When I connected with FileZilla, it worked; Internet Explorer worked too. When I set my default directory back to the folder with 280+ files, both failed again. The timeout problem is somehow related to the number of files in the user's default directory; possibly a delay in responding with the directory listing. The user who originally reported the problem had over 200 directory entries (files and folders) in their default directory also. I split them into 5 sub directories such that each contained less than 50 files. They could then connect and list files in all directories with either FTP client. What I don't understand is why the number of files listed effects SSL/TLS closure as mentioned above. I have opened a case with Sun technical support and will post the solution when I have it.

Solution:
The issue has been resolved for my Solaris 10 FTP server. Turned out it's network interface card was not configured correctly. The switch interface for it's network connection was set to 100mb Full Duplex. The server's NIC was set to 100mb Half duplex with Auto Negotiate on. This resulted in hundreds of CRC errors, which probably appeared to IE and FileZilla as attempted hacks into the system. I forced the server's NIC settings to 100mb Full Duplex with Auto Negotiate off. Users are no longer receiving error messages during connection, can list 200+ file/directory listings, and response time is much better.

Since I've bridged my modem I am now getting the error "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server"

11:10:19 Status: Resolving address of harleyridinglady.com
11:10:19 Status: Connecting to 75.117.240.252:21...
11:10:20 Status: Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server".
11:10:20 Error: Could not connect to server

11:11:02 Status: Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server".
11:11:02 Error: Could not connect to server
I was able to login to ftp.windstream prior to this with no problem and have accessed a public server also today for a test.

My settings are Passive w/allow fallback to other transfer modes.
Use servers external IP
Get external IP addy from FileZilla / Don't use external IP
Ask operating system for a port
When tested I get:
Connecting to probe.filezilla-project.org
Response: 220 FZ router and firewall tester ready
USER FileZilla
Response: 331 Give any password.
PASS 3.3.0.1
Response: 230 logged on.
Checking for correct external IP address
Retrieving external IP address from http://ip.filezilla-project.org/ip.php
Checking for correct external IP address
IP 75.117.240.252 hf-bbh-cea-cfc
Response: 200 OK
PREP 59074
Response: 200 Using port 59074, data token 816296317
PORT 75,117,240,252,230,194
Response: 200 PORT command successful
LIST
Response: 150 opening data connection

And then it just hangs there with the only option to cancel.
While I wait for your response I will play around with the settings some more (I know enuff to be dangerous)!
