Windows 7 + 425 Can't open data connection

#1 Post by devJarrod » 2009-10-26 21:19

Good <timeofdaystamp> to all,

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate and FileZilla Server 0.9.33 beta
I am also using a NETGEAR WGR614V9 Router

In the router, I have forwarded the following ports to the computer that hosts the server:

TCP/UDP: 20-22
TCP/UDP: 60000-60100

In the FileZilla Server Settings I have the following:

General Settings -> Listen on these ports: 21
Passive Mode Setting -> use the following ip: x.selfip.net
Passive Mode Setting -> use custom port range: 60000 - 60100

In the Windows Firewall, after I allowed FileZilla Server, 2 entries were created in the advanced area of the firewall.

One is an UDP rule, the other a TCP rule.

On each of these, the Local Ports and Remote Ports are set to "All Ports" by default.

I can connect to the FTP Server via Internet Browser and FTP Client, but when it attempts to list, I receive the 425 error.

I have read though the guide and am familiar with networking protocols and settings, but I am still not able to iron out this issue.

I have attempted to set the ports in the Windows Firewall rules, but the moment I do so, I am no longer able to connect to the server at all.

PASV mode returned:

I believe Windows itself may be causing this issue, but am not sure where to correct it.
Any suggestions?

Yes, I have disabled the firewall completely and the messages posted above are still occurring. I have also rebooted the router to make sure the ports are not blocked by the old FTP Server I was using.

Those ports are all forwarded?

Yes, the ports

TCP/UDP: 20-22
TCP/UDP: 60000-60100

are all forwarded to the server host in the network.

I have re-installed the other FTP server parallel now to make sure I am not having a hardware issue, and that one is running with no issues.

I will see if I can troubleshoot this when I have some more time freed up, and will reply in this thread if I find the problem and solution in order to help anyone else who might have this particular issue.

By the way, why did you forward ports 20 and 22?

Was there any resolution to this problem? I'm having almost the same exact issue.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, FZS, Netgear WGR614 v7.

Try this:
FileZilla Server options - Passive Mode Settings - Use the following IP (your FTP-Server IP-address).

I have solved this problem for myself and thought you might want to try this. Almost drove me crazy but here goes:

There are 2 firewalls on Windows Server 2008. The one that you manage through Server Manager and Local Security Policy (or IP Filter to further confuse).

See attachment and follow instructions below. This clearly explains what I did below.

1. On the Server. Click on IP Filter icon (Also called Local Policy)
2. Click on "Goto IP Security Policies on Local Computer"
3. Right-CLick on "Packet Filter"
4. You can choose to "Unassign". This allows your other firewall settings to work independently of these settings which might cause confusion. Fixed my problem.
5. OR Click on Properties and see entries.
Default ones should be fine but for some reason my "Block ALL" setting was turned ON. Turn this OFF. Also fixes my problem with passive connections.

Good Luck
Nick
