fzshellext.dll removed by norton
Downloaded filezilla yesterday and this happened today, I'm guessing it's a false positive? apparently norton claims the risk is high..
Re: fzshellext.dll removed by norton
Hi, I have the same problem. I just downloaded 3.5.2_win32 and Norton put fzshellext.dll in quarantine. Is it safe to recover the file?
Re: fzshellext.dll removed by norton
If you downloaded FileZilla from this very site, then yes. And contact Symantec and tell them about the FP.
No support requests over PM! You will NOT get any reply!!!

So they claim the risk is high, but can they explain why? Never trust a claim that is not backed by facts.

Re: fzshellext.dll removed by norton
hello all,
this very problem just happenned on my computers fzshellext.dll from fillezilla was just removed with a high risk in norton antivirus 2012
Saying the threat is named SONAR.modulelgen.3 but when i go to the site i can't find any info.
What i think happens it detect some kind of suspiscious activity in the dll like some explorer or kernel hooks and blocks it.
Considering almost all new machines from hp/acer/dell etc come with some form of norton antivirus product installed, and that the virus defs need to be updated before installing filezilla, i think it would be best if the devs here collaborated with symantec to allow fillezilla to work on everyone's machines.
by that i mean submit new dll's to be scanned before releasing new version that way we're never caught off guard like this again.
thanks.

Wrong. It would be best if symantec would stop the useless av FUD and instead would focus on providing instructions how to keep a system secure through proper configuration and use.Considering almost all new machines from hp/acer/dell etc come with some form of norton antivirus product installed, and that the virus defs need to be updated before installing filezilla, i think it would be best if the devs here collaborated with symantec to allow fillezilla to work on everyone's machines.

right , well that's your opinion, and wether or not you like norton, it would be best for the users of filezilla to have the devs handle this right now and collaborate with them. Build your "norton insight" reputation from the source and save everyone the trouble !botg wrote:Wrong. wether you decide to do that or not, thanks anyway.
Re: fzshellext.dll removed by norton
If your virus scanner is broken in that it produces many false-positives, why should I find a workaround for a problem that is clearly with your virus scanner?
Re: fzshellext.dll removed by norton
He's not saying you should "fix" your program. He's merely saying that you should notify norton of the dll's safety so others maybe spared of the surprise.
Re: fzshellext.dll removed by norton
And what about other vendors? I can't notify over a hundred different vendors each time I release an update. Notifying only a subset of vendors on the other hand is unfair to the other vendors.

Reason: Version of the files have to match thus the method described is troublesome.
