My website keeps asking for username and password

#1 Post by zedara » 2011-12-02 10:08

Hi and good morning,
I have created from scratch my company's website but everytime anyone tries to enter the website, it asks for a an username and a password. I have created other websites in the past but it;s the first time I see this error. What's wrong?
My website is <removed>

Thank you in advance

Your site does not seem to have an index document (index.html). I get a 404/403 error, but no password prompt.

This only happens with Javascript on, so it seems that one or more scripts are in a place that requires a login. For example the ../test/ directory?

Do you use any .htaccess files?

I can't delete the test directory because it's there by default by my web host. And no I haven't put any .htaccess file on this website

Hm, is the test directory outside of public_html? Because only files and directories in public_html (or similar named weeb directory) are shared to the public.

All the files that are uploaded are inside the httpdocs folder.. Test folder is outside httpdocs folder. Plus it's empty

When I displayed the page source, there were some spots where it tried to load scripts from the test directory, e. g. ../test/stmenu.js (example, may be similar). I guess that since the test directory is outside your web directory, any access attempt provokes a prompt. Search the spots where it tries to load from that directory and fix them/comment out.

It seems that this was the problem. Some scripts were directed to a folder outside the ftp. So I changed the linking and BOOM! Done! PS: I needed to remove some restrictions from the control panel of my web host (In case other people have the same problem)
So 1st check the links
2nd check your web host

Thank you a lot. I really appreciate your help.

I have the similar kind of problem with my newly built website. It asks for username and password. Though it says the username is 'administrator' and password 4+2 = '6' but it is annoying, confusing and disturbing.
