Issues with FTPs (Yahoo web hosting, Verizon DSL)

#1 Post by mistakenly » 2014-08-26 00:42

Hi. I'm fairly new to FTP so please bear with me, I may not understand you if you use technical language.

I am responsible for updating the website for the business I work for. This is done twice per week, on Mondays and Thursdays. It is VERY important to our business that these updates be done.

I am trying to talk my boss into using a different host besides Yahoo, but currently that's what I have to work with. I use a visual design client which, unfortunately, does not support FTPs, which is what Yahoo uses. So, I got FileZilla, learned how to plug in the info it needs to connect, and I know how to upload stuff to get the site updated that way. Easy peasy.

Except sometimes it just doesn't want to connect.

It seems random. Some days, it won't connect for maybe half an hour, then I'll try again and it will be fine. Other days it won't connect even with me trying over the course of the entire day. I don't believe this is a problem with FileZilla, as I've tried three other FTP clients with the same results, but I thought maybe you folks with more experience than myself could help a girl out.

I've tried getting in touch with Yahoo, but after waiting for a reply, they basically sent me a generic "Are you connected to the internet? Here's how to find your password for your login info" etc etc. I'm not THAT stupid. My internet connection works, and I know all of the login info is correct because it will still connect at times--just not every time!!

Yahoo's final suggestion is to contact my ISP because they may be blocking the connection or something. But again, it DOES work! So I don't want to believe it has anything to do with my ISP, but maybe I'm wrong. I imagine, though, if this were a big issue with Yahoo's web hosting that they would have informed me of a current problem they are aware of.

All I want to do is figure out exactly why this does not always work. Until my boss gets around to changing web hosting providers, I'm stuck with Yahoo and stuck with uploading via FileZilla, because Yahoo's file manager is a pick-5-individual-files-at-a-time joke. So, can any of you help me out?

For what it's worth, when I try to connect with FileZilla and it doesn't work, this is what I see:

If connecting sometimes works and sometimes fails using the exact same login credentials, then the server is broken. Contact your server administrator or server hosting provider for assistance.

Thank you. Unfortunately, Yahoo does not make it very easy for me to get in touch with someone, and when I submitted a ticket for the problem, the person who responded claimed they could not replicate the issue (and of course, there is no way for me to directly reply to them and insist that I am still having the same problem).

I am going through the same thing with century link dsl. I am thinking that there is a screw up in the ftp password database. I came to this because I can log into yahoo with my password but not not the ftp site with the same password.

I tried a different ftp client (winSCP) as a test and got an error as well .

Yahoo gave me the stock answers as well.
I am waiting for them to get back to me a second time.

Very glad to hear it's not just me! I wrote to Yahoo again, this time specifically telling them that I have read through the page they copy-pasted from and that NOTHING about my login info has changed. This is the response I got:
Hello Kira,

Thank you for contacting Yahoo Small Business Support.

My name is Ancila and I am happy to assist you.

I understand you are unable to establish an FTPS connection. I apologize for the inconvenience.

We've confirmed your issue, but aren't able to make the needed corrections right now. We've reported your case to our engineering specialists for further review. You should hear from them within the next 24 hours.

If you need to contact us about this again for any reason, your case number is: [(removed)].

We know this is important to you, and we're working fix it as quickly as we can.

Thank you again for contacting Yahoo Small Business Support.

Regards,

Ancila
Of course it's been 26 hours since that e-mail and I have not heard from their "engineering specialists".

For what it's worth, I went into Yahoo's site manager page and created an FTP access user for myself, with a unique login id and password. It worked!! But, when I made a second one for my boss and asked him to try it out, he couldn't log in. Thankfully it looks like we'll be switching web hosts within the next week. I hope you have better luck!

Interesting. I tried the alt ftp site and another user and password. Didn't work.
I just entered another new user and password and it worked!? What the heck
I am thinking maybe it's time to find another host also
