Users unable to write to their directories even with permissions

#1 Post by margar123 » 2019-02-08 20:02

Hi all,

I have a group of users that are sharing files via FTP. For example:

C:\FTP\DEVELOPER\<username>

They have access to other areas of the FTP, but I have been mapping each user's developer area by adding it to their profile, selecting an alias of "/DEVELOPER" and having it point to their directory.. for example C:\FTP\DEVELOPER\MARYSMITH would see the alias "/DEVELOPER" when Mary logged in and it would be in the C:\FTP\DEVELOPER\MARYSMITH directory.

When they log in, they can see the directory and all the existing files that were copied into it, but they can't upload or make any writes to this directory. I have checked their permissions for that individual directory in their user profile - and they are all checked ON for all the writing/creating/etc., options.

I'm sure it's something simple I am missing, but can't figure out why they aren't able to write to their own directories, even with the permissions set to allow them?

Thanks!

What is the default Home directory? If it's C:\FTP, then the physical DEVELOPER directory is in conflict with the DEVELOPER alias of the same name. Does it work if naming the Alias differently?

Hey Boco -

Thanks for the reply. The way I have it set up (and maybe this is the problem) is that they are a member of a "Developer" profile. That profile gives them access to

C:\FTP\Files (and any of the other subdirectories)

So, when anyone with the Developer profile logs in, they see all the directories within C:\FTP\Files. I don't have it set up individually as users to have that be their home directory, just within profiles.

The C:\FTP\Developer\<username> is just another subdirectory off the FTP directory, but not within \Files.

I figured as the \Files & subdirectories were covered as read-only within the Developer profile, adding a separate directory on a per user (i.e. Mary Smith seeing a new C:\FTP\Developer\MarySmith) directory would be OK.

Thanks!

That should normally work, as long as no C:\FTP\Files\DEVELOPER directory or file exists. Such a directory or file would conflict with the Alias set.

C:\FTP\Files as Home of the Group (or each account), Read-only.
C:\FTP\Developer\:u as directory in the Group (or manually in each account), Read+Write.

What you could check, is, if the account the FileZilla Server runs under (normally SYSTEM) has full rights to the whole C:\FTP subtree.

OK thanks... I'll have to check the permissions for the my RDP account. The company has me RDP into the server. I believe I'm an admin, but for whatever reason, can't seem to figure out the issue w/ the DEVELOPER folder. I might just move it out of C:\FTP and see if that helps resolve. Definitely has me stumped.

Appreciate the help and will check it out..

Thx!

Remote Desktop might do strange things to accounts. The best administration is done locally. I know that's not always possible in reality, just wanted to mention it.

Agreed! I wish I had the ability but being a remote employee, I'm just happy they recognize my name. LOL.. Thanks!!

BTW: I moved the developer folder to C:\ (out of \FTP) and all the permissions work fine. Must be some issue with what I had before - but glad it worked.

Thanks again for the help!
