Why does Siteground hosting "time out" or "lag" with Filezilla?

#1 Post by devnado » 2019-07-06 23:17

I have a Siteground hosting account with the "grow big" package.

Whenever I'm using Filezilla to move files, etc. almost every session the directory will just freeze and if click to open folders nothing happens.

But if you are constantly doing activity, like moving and clicking and uploading, etc. it's fine. But as soon as you stop doing stuff for a minute, the directories basically freeze, and will take like 15 seconds to start working again.

I've contacted Siteground and asked 3 different support agents about this "lag" and they said there's nothing wrong on their end.

For comparison, I also manage a GoDaddy hosting account and it has never suffered from this issue.

So this is why I'm confused... I must have the wrong settings or something...

• What is going on here?

• Can this be fixed?

Sounds like one of these badly configured servers that drop your login after being idle for a ridiculously short time (like 60 seconds). You might have some success by enabling "Send FTP keepalive commands".

Ok great thank you, looks like that is the case with siteground.

Would you be able to share a link of a guide showing how to create a FTP keepalive command?

Just enable it in Settings - Connection - FTP.
